Camano Pet ST - LB Camano Pet was originated by Dick Ambrose in 1997 and remains one of the gold standard "Stellar" type dahlias more than 15 years later. It won the coveted Stanley Johnson award in 2006 and continues to win today bringing in 105 awards last growing season. I grew it for the first time in 2012, and it produced many nice sized blooms on a 4 foot plant. It was also delicious for the bugs. For me, the blooms on the "primary" laterals were larger measuring over 4 inches (laterals attached to the main stem). The later blooms were about 3/4 - 1 inch smaller. The earlier blooms also had more of a pinkish tint to them and almost an informal decorative twist of the petals (not ideal for a stellar). Camano Pet is known to be a productive seed producer and has been used by many hybridizers in their attempts. Ted will be able to give a better list; but I remember it is a parent of Bloomquist Barbara, Verrone's Jerry and Verrone's Sandra J. ![]() Thanks again to honnat for the submission. |

I wonder whether it would breed nicely with Alloway Candy, which is the best stellar I currently have. My photos are licensed CC BY (Attribution). More Dahlia photos here. That's really pretty. I'm so glad you do the dahlia of the week post, because I get to see and hear about some types I might not have considered. Knowing a little more about them makes a difference. C DG All gardening is landscape painting. - William Kent |

Camano Pet has been the challenge flower at several shows. My wife and I got to judge about 75 entries of it at a show. That did take quite a long time and we each chose 4 or 5 of our favorite entries and moved them to another table to continue judging. Even with about 15 flowers it took some time to determine the best. We did reach a consensus on the best one but the second best took longer to pick. It can vary quite a bit in color, probably the shaded flowers having the brightest flowers. The picture that is posted shows a flower with the ray florets going in several directions. Here is a picture I took many years go. The florets are very orderly and recurve entirely to the stem. ![]() It is a good seed parent and several really nice stellar flowers are seedlings along with some other forms too. I We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden. |

I have this on order for this year. I look forward to trying it. Maybe I should try to polilnate a couple of them! I'll have to think about that! I do love stellars. Salish Dahlias |
