I am an advocate that they establish a class for picotee dahlias. Here is the wiki definition:
Picotee is a variety of flower whose edge is a different colour than the flower's base colour.[1] The word originates from the French picoté, meaning 'marked with points

This is seedling 12-55 that definitely has petals lined with a darker color. One well known picotee dahlia is Clearview Debbie

So would the creation of a picotee class take the variety Clearview Debbie out the class of formal decorative?

For anyone who is not connected to Facebook, Steve Boley posted this suspected picotee seedling from a show. At this time, no one has figured out who the exhibitor was, and many are drooling over it, wondering when they can obtain a plant/tuber...

All dahlia forms could be picotee color. There are 15 "colors" (actually 9 colors and 6 patterns of colors) right now. This one would be number 16. So Clearview Debbie would be B FD PIC W/DP or something like that. The yellow one would be BB ID PIC Y/R.

The yellow one was a seedling according to Loney Kennedy. Hopefully, they will eventually sell it.

That sure would add to the pileup of letters... Hilarious! But if you're not interested in specific info about a variety, you wouldn't use the abbreviations, anyhow. "Over six inches? Dinnerplate!" Glare

I like your idea. It appeals to my retentive side of my personality, needing to have things easily sortable.

The yellow with red picotee is from Marge Thatcher, and her daughter-in-law, Janet, told me on one of the FB dahlia pages that it will be released for next season. Thumbs up

I also have Crazy Love, Belred Desire, Verrone's Taylor Swift, and the NoID waterlily that are all picoteed. Now my Camano Pet has a picotee, too, but it may not be stable, as I don't remember it earlier in the season.

Wow, I wonder how consistent that color will be when grown in different areas. Any idea if it will be in trial gardens?

The anthocyanins that create the picotee edge on the flower are subject to the usual things that happen to them. Some fade, most bleed. Really hot weather would be hard on them. I am not familiar with the person who bred it. Sometimes flowers like this end up in trial gardens; more often they are just sold.

I saw a yellow one with a red picotee edge at the show in California, but it does not appear to be the same one unless it can bleed a lot at the tips and have the petals roll back further. The picotee edge was much more defined in real life: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mary_on_flickr/9696967768/

My Camano Pet did that, too, Mary, and I wonder if it's not the cooler weather that allows the picotee? It's not one that is supposed to have one, normally.

My Camano Pets mostly have the red edge on them, so that would probably confirm that it comes out in cooler weather. It does add to the charm of an already charming variety! Lake Ontario from Alpha also has tht red edge in all but the hottest weather we have had this summer. Its a very thing line but customers pick up on it and really like it.

Here is picture of a collarette with picotee petaloids. Ntac Eileen. I now have two collarettes growing as the Belred Sunset tuber is actually a yellow collarette.

I like NTac Eileen, Ted. If I have enough tubers of Belred Sunset would you like one next year? I have 2 plants growing. I bought them from lobaughs this year. I will definitely want to grow them again but in a sunnier spot.
