Flower Power!
Yesterday, I visited Locust Grove Estate which was home to Samuel Morse, inventor of the Morse Cose. I was surprised to see a beautiful dahlia garden consisting of mainly heirloom dahlias. I took photos which I hope you enjoy.

Thanks for the nice pictures. Old dahlias are an interesting subject. Thomas Edison is still the most purple of all dahlias in my opinion.

Nice pix, Tina! I will have to check them out next year. I've grown several in past years but the only one I currently have is Thomas Edison, and I need new stock of that one.

I stopped at the Locust Grove garden yesterday to see how the dahlias are holding up. Volunteers were deadheading and cutting some flowers for bouquets. There are still flowers on the plants, but they are not vibrant as they were on Saturday.

Here are a few more pics:

*I believe the white flower is TSUKI YORI NO SHISHA, 1953.

I stopped at Locust Grove for a quick visit to see how the dahlias are doing this year. They are about half the size that they were last year. In 2017, varieties were all heirlooms but the dahlias are unmarked this year. I suspect that the combination of intense heat, humidity, and torrential rains has really impacted the gardens in my area. Here are a few pics of the flowers that were in bloom:

I am not much of a fan of heirloom dahlias. Some people think they are special because they have survived so many years but most of them are just the ones that make easy storing tubers and are rather difficult to lose. If you look at pictures of dahlias grown in the 1910s through 1940, you will see some very nice dahlias that are long extinct as the tubers did not keep all that well. Perhaps they can do like Jurassic Park and bring some of the really nice ones back for us to grow.

It looks like an ancestor of Labyrinth...I wonder if it was any better a keeper in a bouquet?

That's what I was wondering as well, Noni.

Thanks for the suggestions and picture, Sylvia and Amanda!

GREAT MINDS, C DG. Hilarious! I sure would like to breed a better Labyrinth for the cut flower trade. Of course then the preference for color would probably switch to deep purple. ..

I used to be on the look out for Belle of Barmera when I first started growing dahlias. The color/form are right up my alley. I think I only got hold of stock once that didn't grow for me and I moved on. But maybe I'll try again. CC carries it so it might be worth another try.

I have managed to misplace my notes. Crying It’s not Labyrinth, as I have that at home. Let me think about it and try to remember the name.

Cynthia, I’m sorry... but i’m not sure what this flower was. Locust Grove got a new head gardener in 2018 and the dahlias weren’t labeled. It may have been Labyrinth after all. Here is a pic of my Labyrinth from 2018 as a comparison.
