We got to ring in the New Year with our first frost of the winter. Not a heavy frost, either. The grass was white in the shady spots, but petunias and geraniums were unfazed. I sure am glad I know I don't have to wait for a killing frost before digging my dahlias!

Isn't that the truth! We've had several frosty mornings this week and I don't think I would particularly enjoy washing tubers outside!

Blustery! Will I ever see blustery weather and not think of Winnie the Pooh? WtP and the Blustery Day was a fave with my kids when they were little. And then rain until the middle of next week. The coast silk tassel bushes are blooming. I priced one at the nursery, but wasn't ready to shell out $50 for a 15 gallon one. Does that mean it's a winter bloomer or does that mean it's spring?

It's 50 here today & I have spring fever. Ready to start planting. Big Yellow Grin Sad part is it will likely be 10-20 next week. Hilarious!

Amanda and I must have the same forecast: rain and windy gusts off and on for about 10 days. The Sierra snow pack is less than average so it's true: it's an ill wind that blows no one any good.

Weather is one of the most discussed subjects of gardeners. Here in the PNW it has been a very mild winter with only some minor frost. Geraniums along the foundation at the back of the house are still blooming a bit and in most years they would have been frost nipped with brown foliage(but still barely alive). Long term forecast has no cold weather predicted. Always possible to get some cold weather in February.

We are at the start of an atmospheric river of rain. The forecast is for several inches of rain this week and up to 5 feet of snow in the Sierras. However, the temps are quite mild: the high today will be 59° and the low 52°. I wonder if this is the El Nino that was predicted last fall. Sometimes they call this string of warm storms the pineapple express from Hawaii.

Extremely stormy! House-shaking gusts of wind. Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very... annoying to my cat. Hilarious!

I think the warm air may be reaching us now. Its 49 degrees this evening where it has been in the low 30's in the evening. No wind yet but we will see,,,

Our gardening friend is staying with us for a couple of nights before he heads to Alaska to teach ecology. He got all those daffodils and tulips in the ground today, that arrived as I was dividing tubers and after my assistant left. I don't know how they will bloom this year but the daffs should take over and muliply for the future...

I love that kind of weather! We got the rain and a little wind but not nearly what they predicted or others got.

67° today! We took a drive through the gold country - Sutter Creek, Amador, Jackson - and it was beautiful. People out with their convertible tops down. Passed several large naturalized groups of what I call Snow Drops (not certain that is what they are) and they were all in bloom!

Why do they have to name every storm now? Waiting for Harper to start. Nasty mix of snow ice and rain and Monday it will be a high of 13F after being 40F Sunday. I can't complain unless it brings something down, its been an uneventful Winter for the most part so far.

Flower Power!
I believe our wind chill was -30 last night...brrrr. I am grateful for having a reliable furnace which kept hot water circulating in our baseboard heaters and thus prevented any pipes from freezing. We were warm and safe, thank goodness.

It has been below 0 only once in history in Portland, Oregon and that was many years ago. It has not been below 10 above in several years and here in Oregon City, we have not yet had a hard frost.

I feel so sorry for our friends in Australia and worried for them. One of our Wwoofers was a delightful lady who must be near 80 yrs now and I worry about those who don't have young healthy bodies.
