Here's a bouquet I put together this morning. Dahlia 'Dr. John E. Kaiser' is the focal flower obviously! :) I'd enjoy seeing other arrangements that use a variety of different flowers but feature a dahlia as the star of the show.

You have some very nice flower material in the vase. It is difficult to arrange the flowers when you do not use oasis and you did a good job.

Thanks, yes I agree. I find it helps to first build some structure using filler materials, in this case sedums Matrona and Autumn Joy in tight bud stage, and that gives some support to hold the other flowers in their intended locations.

Margaret is getting ready for her first dahlia show that is the next week end. The garden club judge that put together the categories for the arrangements, listed several of the very hardest categories possible. As you may know for example, doing a Hogarth curve is a nightmare when you use dahlias. In garden clubs they us much smaller flowers .and even then it is very difficult. William Hogarth is one of those famous people who was genius in his time but most of us have never heard of him.

Picture of what appears to be the best arrangement at the Snohomish show. Hollyhill Spiderwoman. Margaret liked the picture.
Later: .I talked to someone in the know and this was probably at the Grays Harbor show and was entered by Penny Armstrong.

Show tomorrow. Margaret has entered 4 designs and left one home as the flowers wilted and the other one that she was going to enter was only done in prototype.

Margaret won best arrangement in show with her water design. It had the new purple waterlily, Sweet 16 and a flower of the HH Bewtched sport from Theresa Bergman. The Bewitched sport is lavender spots on a white background. I thought a couple of other ones would win best but in one case the design was placed in the worst place possible with bad lighting and on a table that was too high. I will post some pictures later.

I picked numerous miniature sized flowers from the seedlings and displayed them in a container with some greens. The largest flowers are 4 inches in diameter and most are a lot less. Here is the dark variegated flower that is usually a bit bigger at probably 4.5 inches in diameter.

Pouring down buckets of rain and the club's picnic starts in a couple of hours. I may arrive late if it is still raining. Meanwhile, Margaret is putting together prototypes for the show coming up. I will share one of them. Be aware she uses overripe and spent flowers for the practice piece and . besides nice flowers, the real one will have fresh greens, be using a different pedestal, the flowers all be white. She always drags me over to look at the prototype "Now imagine if this has some greens here and a flower over there and there will be more curve on the bottom .." and lots more things. Then she says : " Now what do think?" My peanut brain is still calculating the changes and I either politely say it looks great or more likely put my foot in my mouth and say something like "Your curve is really a straight away" and she pretends to adjust the curve, leaving it essentially the same and says " How is that?" I know better to say anything about a straight away. .

Margaret wanted me to take pictures of all of the designs entered in the Eugene Dahlia show. There were 31 of them. Margaret did win best in show with her entry in the Snow White class. It is the Hogarth Curve with Hollyhill seedling flowers and is also pictured above. . We are naming the larger flower HH Snow White . Here is a link to the 31 pictures on Flickr and Margaret's designs are the first four pictures.

Great to see Margaret's efforts were rewarded. From what I can see, the judges did a good job.

What is the white (WL?) in front of HH Snow White? Did you get a chance to compare the shelf-life of the white seedlings?

Ok, not exactly a dahlia arrangement, and while the dahlias are mine, the design is definitely not mine. Anyway, Yellow...(albeit soft yellow) is showing signs of a comeback.

This is MM Buttercream. Great tuber maker and nice vigorous cut flower. I clerked for a team of judges that barely gave it a 2nd look next to Clearview Daniel as they didn't like the sunken centers but it is great for design work and the florist posted that these dahlias were 9 days old.

What is the white (WL?) in front of HH Snow White? I believe it is HH Yukari. This one does not do well in the heat and does not do well in the rain. As we are breeding for waterlilies we tend to keep the best white ones even though they may not be perfect. There will be better white WLs out there eventually and we have marked another one to grow again. Sandia Isa is wonderful SHOW white WL but it has not been real vigorous and the stems were not all that good. Bride to Be, Bridezilla from Swan Island are the best white ones so far for cut flowers. I may try new stock of S. Isa. Kathy Iler's white one(Daisy Adair)would be good but tubers are an issue.
Did you get a chance to compare the shelf-life of the white seedlings? The one we are calling Snow White is doing well. As far as being a "cut flower machine" , it is probably about an inch too wide(5.5 inches wide) and has just an average number of flowers and the plants grow a bit tall at near 6 feet. But it is pure WHITE not not yellow and no lavender or pink blush. I will know more about tubers when I dig but the several plants were grown from tubers.

All cut flower people want good white flowers. Christy Parks showed a basket of HH Chrystal and it is pure white and Margaret wants to get some stock of it from her as we lost our stock several years ago.
