I just report it! Rolling on the floor laughing I plan to switch DahliaAddict over to 2023 shipping on July 14. Hopefully that will give those last few sellers time to close out.

Swan Island is open. Looks to me like their prices went up an awful lot, but maybe I’m remembering wrong. No more free shipping either. I’m guessing there will be quite a lot of higher prices this year.

Thanks for sharing your spreadsheet - that was interesting to browse. The increase in cost on some of the varieties was surprising, I thought. Not always the ones I would have predicted.

I probably won’t place an order this year. I had about five varieties I wanted to order from them, but several ended up not being available this year. I kind of hate making an order for just 2 or 3 tubers unless they’re super special.

Thanks Amanda, several surprising increases, as Julia noted.

I put in an order for about 6 if I recall right...I think they were all older ones I have had and lost or ones that are new in the last 3 years and now down to a price that I can justify.

First dahlia I ever grew from swan island was "neon splendor" lol. Glad they still sell it. I still grow 1 plant just for sentimental reasons. Can't believe mystique is $20 a tuber now that was one of the other first ones I grew from them. I usually get 5-6 tubers per plant.

Supply and demand. The spreadsheet was interesting but not unexpected. I bet it would be an interesting artifact to explore when they talk about the "Great Dahlia Boom" at the turn of the century. Haha. Likened to the Tulip craze of the 1600's (correct century?)

However, I'll never feel bad about a farm making money or even *gasp* turn a profit. I hope many more farms learn to be better businesses and can afford a standard of living beyond hoping they can afford health insurance.

Anyone who is crazy enough to farm for a living deserves every dime they make. My grandfather was a "real" farmer (alfalfa, corn, cattle) and when I told him I was going to raise dahlias for a living he said "Well, you should also plant something to eat so you don't starve to death."

That is for sure, Steve! I grew up on a farm and we would not have survived without a big garden, orchard, and Mom's chickens that provided us with food. And any beef we had was usually from something too old and tough to sell so we had a lot of hamburger....

Triple Wren Farms currently has tubers available for sale for 2023. Salish Twilight Girl is $30 a tuber and already sold out.

Its too bad Salish Twilight Girl doesn't make more tubers....She is definitely a bit of a primadonna!ON the other hand, A percentage of those sales goes into my pocket :-). We are heading up there today as honored breeder guests for their special event. I know Sandy Boley will be there, not sure who else. Kristine Albrecht is speaking. I am feeling a bit awkward after 3 years of social isolation, LOL...I am glad it is an outside event.

I'm imagining one of these days I'll manage to get a Salish Twilight Girl tuber to grow. I'll have to make a lot more space in the garden for all the "one of these days tubers" the list is growing. It's nice to see people getting residuals for their introductions from tuber vendors. Congratulations on the event invitation. Looks like those years of hybridizing have paid off.

I grabbed a few Bloomquists at the Triple Wren sale, but was too late for several of my most wanted varieties there. My 5 Triple Wren tubers last year were great and the plants are doing *very* well.

The castle drive they are selling is coralie. I know because I got 2 last year and it was coralie lol. That said all my tubers i got from TW did very well

Bloomquist Champion is a nice flower but very leggy plant, which i don't like. I still think HH Black beauty and Shadow Cat are 2 of the better dark reds / burgundy on the market even though they have been around for years.

Congratulations, Noni. I hope that you have fun at the event.

I also picked up a few Bloomquist varieties: Alan, Compare, and Sue. “Castle Drive” (thanks for the heads up, Michael), Ferncliff Alpine, and Skipley Spot of Gold jumped in my cart as well. I purchased Bloomquist York from Triple Wren last year and felt comfortable spending more money there this season.

We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
Shadow Cat was my favorite variety when we first saw it at Les Connell's(about 1992) and then grew it. The next year it caught something that could have been a virus and instead of 7 feet tall it was only 5.5 feet and although not real sick, it was not the same. I loved the name too. Seedlings as I recall were either no good or did not make seeds, cannot remember for sure.
We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden.
