Amanda, which shrub is this? I can't recognize it from the picture. Some trees and shrubs grow back from the base, mainly by suckers or a thicketing habit; quite a few can do that and still have live roots in the ground. How much stump was left?

Thank you so much for asking. I love an excuse to talk about plants. This was a 'purple hopseed bush'. It's a very handsome NZ native that is fast growing and reseeds enthusiastically. They don't sucker and they don't sprout from old wood. I am sorry to lose that one, but fortunately it is not one of those things where it will be 20 years to see its like again. Interestingly the native wax myrtle next to it was solid as a rock whereas the other PHB in the yard we cut back by half during a break in the storm because it was looking like it was about to be torn out by the roots as well.
