2-7-2023 Admin Announcement-

The Cubits 'Growing Dahlia' community have migrated to https://forum.dahliaaddict.com to continue our conversations in similar threads. Please join us there.

Some members have also joined the dahlia conversations at https://garden.org/forums/view/dahlias/, where a lot of the garden.org members are also active in other plant forums on the site. There is also a FaceBook page called Cubits Dahlia Friends that members of this dahlia Cubit would be welcome to join.

I have heard from Dave, the Cubit developer/owner, and he will be migrating the Dahlia FAQ and public threads into the Garden.org dahlia forum so all the growing gems over the years won't be lost when Cubits website is taken down.

With CUBITS shutting down, I was thinking about where we all could go to continue our connection and helpful discussions. Garden.org has a dahlia forum. I could also create a new one on ProBoards. I think the later operates similarly to CUBITS but with better support.

Thoughts?

I’m not familiar with either format but I’d join whichever platform others here agree on. I would love to continue to be able to talk with you guys.

Do the admins have access to the database so that this site could be transferred to a new forum? It would be a shame to lose all the info here. I guess it would be possible to manually recreate this site from Google cache but what a pain.

Maybe set up a temp site on Facebook with the keywords Cubits Dahlias so people can find some info if the site goes down today?

If you have Private Messages here with info you need this is a good time to copy it.

I can ask Dave (the webmaster creator and owner of both sites) about transferring over any public threads over to NGA. When we initially moved to the new site over 10 years ago, he transferred the Rose Cubit over in it's entirety.

You would need to decide how far back you want to go if he agrees to the transfer. We can even be manually change the thread titles to include "Cubits' to designate their origin.

Copying my post from another thread:

As everyone noticed, the web server crashed with a very serious and rare error. Dave was able to temporarily restore it but it will certainly crash again. He wanted to make sure folks could use their time to have all their personal connections put together.
He's sad to see it go and hopes everyone that connected with each other through this community is able to continue their relationships either on his garden website National gardening Association https://garden.org/ or elsewhere. We know lots of friendships were made here on Cubits.

We have several already moving over to https://garden.org/ some in private group messages, some already navigating with new blogs on there and in the Sandbox forum for things that aren't garden related. To find garden related forums, click on the Community tab for a drop down menu to find all the forums.

I have the same user name over there and will gladly help anyone with navigating the site.
Memberlist is at the very bottom to do a search for anyone, I know some members here are on that site too.

We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
I joined the dahlia thread at garden.org. No time to learn how to use it right now but perhaps it is a good site to continue with some of our long winded postings.
We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden.

they sure didn't give any notice! Site down all day yesterday and then that message. How long do we have?
Proboards (wordpress) may be a possibility. Not sure if it is paid but might be worth investigating. What I love about cubits is the photos. Can we migrate the entire thing? I would hate to lose all of this great info and connection

Brenda,
This site has been running on it's own with outdated features for years and was bound to eventually fail. The crash was a rare server fail and a wakeup call. The webmaster/owner wasn't even sure if he could restore it. (see my earlier post above.}

National Gardening Association has photos in threads and posts and a plant database where you also add all your photos.
The webmaster Dave originally created DavesGarden, then Cubits and then he created an even better site than DG by starting All Things Plants. He eventually bought out National Gardening Association and integrated all it's features into the new site and also updated the name.

I think it would be great if we could move as much as possible over to Gardens. If there’s a limit maybe all the articles & the last 5 years of threads?

I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone here and would love to continue the dahlia chats. It really been a joyful part of my days. My email is [email protected] - please reach out and/or keep me in the loop! I am @kitcmc2 on Instagram, but my account is private so a follow request is in order. I also follow LeeAnn. I will move over to garden.org for now, my name is the same: KitCMC

Calif_Sue is there anything I can do to help preserve all that’s here? It’s a bit like dahlia university and I haven’t graduated yet!

I'm sure some, if not all non-private threads can be transferred over to the NGA Dahlia forum if this Cubit owners decide in that direction.

Thank you Sue for shepherding us. What a loss.

The internet archive/Wayback machine has some of the information here captured, but it is a little tedious to navigate and incomplete.

I have a previously neglected account at garden.org: Weiss1. I must have felt clever when making the account. I’ll miss this space.

I am Emilyp at garden.org. I see a forum for dahlias, is that where everyone will post, or are we hoping for a new "growing dahlias" forum so not to disrupt an established space?

Love it Janell, I hade to say it out loud to get it Hilarious! Sometimes it takes me a minute!

I made an email account, [email protected]. If you would like to send or receive info regarding this group, send an email. I will do my best to disseminate information in a timely way without being a nuisance. I will never share any personal information, and will always use bcc when sending emails.

If you would like to share with the group about organizing someplace else on a different platform I will send that info out.

I thought this might provide a temporary stopgap to try and hold the group together if a different, more organized plan isn’t finalized before cubits closes down. I only intend it to be temporary. We’ll see Confused
