We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
Roland Verrone is a breeder about 100 miles from here. We all thought it was cute that he named a flower after the entertainer. It was rumored that he tried to contact her about it but that she did not return his calls. I remember talking to him about the genetics of the flower and others. He liked to take seeds from Camano Pet and several of his introductions were seedlings of it. One of the best is Verrone's Sandra J. that he named after his wife. Naming a dahlia after your wife is an indication that it must be nice flower and it is a very nice flower. Roland just turned 70 and has stated to me that he is semi retired from selling dahlias and intends on breeding and selling his own varieties only. That is too bad as he was famous for his over sized pot tubers.
We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden.
