We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
Hollyhill Valentino did not sell out because I was able to plant more of it than the others that did sell out. When introducing new ones, you cannot predict which will win medals and which will be more popular but you can make a good guess. I knew that Valentino was outstanding and was able to plant a lot of it. It went on to pass in all seven trial gardens where it was entered(the only dahlia that did that this year) and won the Derrill Hart medal. I did not try to get it passed on the ADS bench but probably should have as it could have done quite well. I was not able to plant as many of Hollyhill Regal as I wanted. Big Red was also sold by Dan's Dahlias and we both sold out quickly because more people buy the the new Giant and Large dahlias than smaller varieties.
We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden.
