By Annmarie Bailey on November 17, 2010

As an Insurance Agent for 20+ years, I learned from other owners mistakes that Fido should never be allowed to travel unrestrained in a vehicle, nor be left unattended in a vehicle. I have taken many claims over the years where beloved pets and people were injured,or vehicles were damaged, all due to unrestrained, unattended or improperly restrained animals. All of these claims were unnecessary losses.

Anne Marie - you've written about something I've been fretting about for a long time. Thank you!
I've just adopted a 4 yr old Standard Poodle, Lexie. My stockbroker wants to meet her on Friday and I'll bring her to the office. I will use the harness I've had for about 12 years. She is my third standard and I've never used the harness. I regret to say I didn't use it the day I brought my 5 yr old old from surgery (lymphoma). I was in a head-on collision and badly broke my left leg. My dear Lex (similar names and very strange for me) was fine sitting in the back seat and unharmed. Luckily. The EMTs here in AZ are not allowed to transport animals in totalled vehicles. Luckily my angels (EMTs) DID take my dog with me in the truck... to my home... when I was met and transported to hospital.

Sorry I missed this, what a lucky dog you had! Nothing like a personal story to bring home the message. I also hope your leg is all better.

I've taken Lexie on a drive using the harness twice now. I must say she seems MUCH more settled in the car than traveling w/out the harness. I feel safer too. A friend of mine has 6 dogs and needs to cart them/or some of them here and there at times. She doesn't use a harness though knows she should. The reason she knows is that once while driving one of the Border Collies became stressed and JUMPED into her lap preventing her from maneuvering. I don't see an Emoticon to post here....

Time to get some doggie emoticons, I think they would be lots of fun.
Dogs jumping in a car is certainly an accident waiting to happen.
