I was living in Encino, CA and was about 6 yrs. old. My family was sitting down to dinner together when the quake hit. The floor lamp near the dinner table began to rock violently and my dad picked me up to run outside. From that time I realized there was a giant living under our house. I realized that if I fed it soap bubbles the giant would be happy and we would not have another earthquake. This belief was in place until the Cuban Missile Crisis when I was told that should we have a "bomb drill" we were to go to the crawl space under the house. Well, of course the giant was no longer with us. Otherwise my parents wouldn't tell be to crawl into "his" house.

There is lots of horrible devastating that can be brought down by an earthquake. Outside of that, for me, experiencing an earthquake is awesome. Feel the power of the earth. Living in southern and northern California I've been in lots of earthquakes. ... and I'm impressed with every single one.

I experienced a 5.0 earthquake when I was a child. It was a little scary, but I was in school and my teacher was very calm, so by the time the earth stopped moving it just seemed like no big deal. Of course, nothing fell or crumbled or broke.

Nothing like a good shaker. I love earthquakes. It's part of an ever changing topography or earth surface. Well, under-surface, too. Big Grin

My belief is, and there are all sorts of people studying this, buildings hurt people, earthquakes don't. Countries in regions of high, active seismic activity should not build with non-reinforced concrete, and there are lots better building materials and techniques to prevent buildings collapsing and harming people. Governments are being taken to task re this issue. Angry
