Speaking of gas...
When I was a child growing up on the San Francisco Peninsula my grandfather and dad would do a little yard work and we'd accumulate a few cuttings, trimmings, trash. It was a big deal to drive out to the dump, dump the stuff then go feed the ducks on the shoreline. The dump was right next to the Bay in Palo Alto, CA. Well, in 1985 the dump was turned into a really beautiful entertainment area including a great amphitheater and a nice golf course. I don't know if it was anticipated that the breakdown of the trash would include the creation of methane gas... but it did. I smoked cigarettes at the time and played golf. If I had a cigarette lit at the time I needed to putt I'd toss the lit cig onto the grass of the putting green. There were times when flames would shoot up from no where... leaking methane gas. I was at the a Jimmy Buffett concert at the Shoreline Amphitheater. We lugged in our hidden "boat drinks" and settled on the grassy hillside. People were smoking and since it was dusk you could see flames popping up here and there. People actually had to move their blankets from the flames because you couldn't snuff them out. Later a system was installed to direct the release of the methane out of the fill. Another "unintended consequences" event. Smiling

Roasting away again in Margaritaville. Very funny.

I so wish that we had a systematic way to remove valuable stuff from garbage. A friend of mine, also an engineer, shrugs his shoulders and says "Well, after the great crash garbage dumps will be considered rich veins of local resources. Recycling will just happen naturally." I guess it's so: Used computers for gold, silicon, plastic, and glass. Used telephones, speakers, and motors for copper, cobalt, neodynium, and iron. Grass clippings and sewerage for methane. And so on.

I hear ya, Steve,

I first read this issue of National Geographic in my doctor’s office … meaningful. It’s shocking. There are many, many recycle options for E-Waste… it’s got to be done with laws and scrutiny. Too many people can be hurt / injured by the unethical. Take the quiz below, it’s an eye-opener.
