This is an area that has been under study/research for decades. I once owned stock in a Canadian corporation called Ballard Power. I don't know if it still exists (hmmmmmm, I wonder how well they're doing). There has been lots of government funding committed to research and development and still there isn't a viable commercial product. Even Ford Technologies and other big auto firms have done lots of research. Takes a while to get a product to the masses at a good price while still providing a profit. I have read that the Prius is manufactured and sold at a loss to Toyota. Also, as technologies develop, they fall in and out of favor from U.S. presidential administration to the next. In 2003 G. W. Bush felt hydrogen fuel cell was the way to the future. In 2009 the Obama administration decided it wanted to put funding into research that may deliver a quicker solution to our thirst for crude/gasoline. I found this video that speaks to the status as of 2009... as I remember. It's from the Department of Energy. The video is good but have a look around the rest of the site. It's great and informative. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fcv_whatsnew.jsp This NY Times article is an example of what to look for when reading about the nation's energy policy and how it may change from admin to admin. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/08/science/earth/08energy.htm... The other is as though everything is a miracle." --Albert Einstein ~ All Things Plants, SOUTHWEST GARDENING ~Cubits.org ENERGY & POWER |
