“The last step to start shutting down the only coal burning power plant left in Washington state was taken Friday when Gov. Chris Gregoire signed a measure that mandates the gradual closure of the TransAlta facility in Centralia.”

“TransAlta will also get expedited permits to build a natural gas-fired plant in Lewis County to come online by 2020. The Canadian company also will be allowed enter into long-term agreements to sell its electricity to other utilities.”

Interesting that Washington state finds it more ecological to support a natural gas burning plant than a coal burning plant. Interesting that the environmentalists want to stop Montana/Wyoming coal from being shipped out of Washington state to China. I find it interesting that we ship coal to China, period. Didn’t know that. My very fertile mind brings up the "spotted owl" news of the early '08s though I'm sure I'm just too suspicious by nature. What do you think?
edited to say that I'm surprised with the choice of burning natural gas (yes, it does burn clean) but with the fracking controversy I find it interesting that that particular pollution is better than the coal burning. I guess it's all based on the carbon/greenhouse footprint.

Ship Carrying Coal Destroys Philippine Coral Reef.
Officials say a ship loaded with coal has run aground and destroyed a large portion of a marine sanctuary in the southern Philippines.
Provincial environment officer Eduardo Saladero of Sarangani province says the MV Double Prosperity damaged precious coral reefs in Sarangani Bay where it has remained aground since Sunday.
Coast guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Algier Ricafrente said Thursday the Panamanian-registered ship with 21 Filipino crew members was headed to India from Australia carrying 65,000 tons of coal.
Ricafrente said an investigation showed the ship's crew miscalculated its path and sailed into shallow waters.
