... and Carol ... you'll be the expert on this. (caveat... I think MOST pineapple is now grown in the Philippines) I was wondering about using pineapple peels (waste) as a bio-fuel product... high in water/sugar and abundant. Ran across this article probably written about 5+ years ago... hard to tell. Personally, I was particularly interested to see that Steve Case (founder AOL ) owns Grove Farm (big as Maui Land and Pineapple? but, private?). I used to work for his deceased brother, Dan, in San Francisco. Brilliant guy. But, according to this article, which is promotional at best, there is quite an organized effort to research bio-fuels uses. My problem with a strong body like this is that they could squeeze out the little guy who might have the "answer"... Have a read. http://www.lifeofthelandhawaii.org/Biofuels_Ethanol_Biodiese... OOOOps, just saw this Susie... Will read it and see what DH has to say. At one point he was very active in Bio-fuel research...and there are folks who have planted Jatropha and oil palms...but it is so hard to get ANYone motivated around here...and many of the folks who come here are running some sort of scam.... Later..... Leap. The net will appear. |

Thanks Carol... when ever the Wizard has a chance to comment. I have a friend from high school in Palo Alto who lives part time in Venice, CA and part on Kauai (has an organic farm and ohana.) She put on her FB that they are organizing on Kauai... maybe other islands, too (I don't know) to get off of fossil fuel and move to hydro-electric. Hydro-electric without damming. There is an activist group and petition going around apparently. I was pretty stunned ... I mean I know Kauai is abundant with H20 but I responded with have you folks thought of residential solar? Even wind (may not be suitable due to habitat and ecosystems, understood) "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." --Albert Einstein ~ All Things Plants, SOUTHWEST GARDENING ~Cubits.org ENERGY & POWER |

Solar is big here...residential as well as being used to power big users (like a slaughter house and all their freezers/coolers). It is big. Kauai has such a small population ... I think of it as off the beaten path...not a lot of "need" compared to Oahu/Maui etc. Never heard of hydroelec. - but should work off Mt. Wai'ale'ale and the waterfalls there....but...access would be pricey..... There are alternatives. But HECO runs the show...and most everything has to go thru them... Will ask the Wizard!!! ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

I bought stock in HECO about 3 months ago. Good dividend. "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." --Albert Einstein ~ All Things Plants, SOUTHWEST GARDENING ~Cubits.org ENERGY & POWER |

Susie, what is Heco's symbol? I found two, so not certain which one it is. I searched on Hawaiian Electric Company. Alan The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart. ~Hellen Keller |

It's HE, Alan. About 5.10% at $1.24 P/S annually when declared by the board. $24.50 a share http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=HE "There are only two ways to live your life. Ouch, good thing I asked, neither of the two I pulled up matched that =) The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart. ~Hellen Keller |

Alan/Carol. I see there may be a difference in the two stock symbols. HECO is Hawaiian Electric Company HE is Hawaiian Electric Industries. I bought stock in HE (Hawaiian Electric Industries. This MAY be different than the company Carol was mentioning. At any rate HE does perform pretty well for a utility and pays a very nice dividend... my priority. Yes, have started the process of transferring funds today. I am totally and completely convinced that alternative fuels are our future! The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart. ~Hellen Keller |
