Alan, Thanks for the links. There seems to be a great deal of confusion out there, even among the people who are writing about LED bulbs. I find the quoted answer inscrutable. If I understand the argument, dimming units that work by lowering the voltage - as one might have done long ago with a rheostat in a circuit with incandescent bulbs - will work poorly or not at all. Other devices (Triacs?) that chop up the 60 Hz sine wave into little bits, setting the voltage to zero for part of the time, might possibly work. It works by faking out the our perception.

Have you ever turned out all the lights after watching TV for hours, sat in total darkness and perceived a 60Hz flicker in your visual field? It can be irritating for a while. Not sure I like the idea of doing something that might possibly augment that effect.

I guess if one wants candle-light effects, there's nothing quite like candles.
