Sigh. I have been trying for sometime to lower my calorie intake. Would like to get down ten pounds as a starting goal. Get to a certain age (I'm 49) and it just does not come off as it once did...and gain instead.

I have started eating more fruits and veggies...but need to continue working on that too. My biggest down fall is night time snack's. Soooo maybe I will join you here for some mutual encouragement.

Also need to walk more. Got two walks in last week and one this week so far...I know more walks will help me too.

I found that avocadoes is very high in calories (322!) but, as my daughter says - "there are good, natural fats, and bad fats. Stay away from the bad fats, and you'll do fine!"
I also found out that Bran Muffins have a lot more sugar than the Fruit Explosion Muffins we can get here at Coffee Shops!! I was totally amazed! A friend of mine, a diabetic, cannot eat Bran Muffins for this reason!!

I really need to do my home work. Makes it so much harder when companies market the healthy part of their food...only to find like you did with the bran muffins, that they are high in sugar content Grumbling

I LOVE avocados too!

If you buy it (like the muffins), it's more likely than not a "bad" thing for you to eat. No boxed or pre-made anything here............make from scratch and no baked goods. Just good lean meat, chix breast, whole pork loin I cut myself into nice, thick chops and grill them (I take off the fat that is still on the outside), fish occasionally. I purchase canned beans, but everything else is fresh...........broccoli, carrots, spinach............No bread in the house at all. I only keep flour and sugar around for baking when I have to take something to a potluck. 10 pounds of flour and sugar lasts me MONTHS. Close to a year.

I will have avocadoes at least once/week. They really are good for you!

Go to myfitnesspal.com (it's free), and it gives all the caloric value for food you eat. What I do is I decide what I'd like to have for a meal, put it in, and then adjust the amount I'm having so it's not so fat-laden! THEN I eat what I want, with the adjusted amounts, based on the calories! Big Grin

I eat pumpernickel bread - very low in calories. We never, ever, eat white bread.
You can pretty much figure (we smart humans, doncha know...) what's good for us to eat. If it bloats you, it's likely not good. If you're "starving" after you eat, they're probably "empty calories" and not good for you.

Apples, btw, are the best fruit for helping you lose weight. Something in their chemistry helps.

I always figure "Everything in moderation" and you're fine. "They" say you should have 5-6 small meals per day. Even an apple is a "meal" because it's a Snack Meal.

I was just over at our church, moving furniture around! and I'm not talking the light stuff...... things like a sectional (recliner, and queen hide-a-bed........yikes!) by myself.
A friend just moved to Malaysia, and our Church is storing her stuff for me to sell. Just got a young couple come who wanted one item, and walked away spending more and buying more Big Grin
Tonight we go back and have the Sectional sold, and the fellow is coming to pick it up at 7pm.

This is all good exercise, and you'd better believe that I'm going to list it on myfitnesspal.com!!

Charleen, those little jumpin' fellas are like the old bouncing ball that used to be shown when a sing-a-long was played on TV or in the old theatres (when people actually participated in group singings....) You just start counting on the downbeat: 1 and a 2 and 3 and a 4.... Hurray! Hurray! Rolling on the floor laughing

Just found you all!!

I've been trying to lose a few pounds too. It's hard because I sit at a desk (cubicle) all day long.

The easiest way for me to lose is portion control. I've dropped 40 pounds in the last year. I also looked up some exercises that I can do at my desk. My trouble spot is my belly *Blush*

How do you like the stepper? I've got bad knees so It's hard to find something like that that won't kill my joints...

I have one bad knee - chiropractor said, after looking at my x-rays and listening to them, that I have very little cartiledge in it, and when I sprained it in April '11, it sure didn't help...... still recovering from it.
I use my stepper, but not for very long at a time. I've been taking a lot of VitD, Flax Seed Oil and Glucosamine which seems to be helping. Steady and increasing use of my knee helps. For some reason, going down stairs hurts less than up....

This reminds me - better log into myfitnesspal.com.......... Big Grin

That is why i walk.. With walking, you can go the speed you feel comfortable. You don't JAR anything. I admire runners but it is not for me.
Kathy, if we jumped like those little fellas, we will jar everything.
Lee Anne , Sometimes Pininterest has light exercise you can do at the desk. I'll start looking for them. We may be able to wiggle around while we are sitting and lose weigh. i know when I'm sitting her I'm always swinging my legs and moving them.

I thought Printerest was only recipes......... will have to check their exercises out!
I used to jog, once upon a time, but that was in my 20's! also, jogging on pavement isn't good for you - can get shin splints, and I hear that's painful.

Susan - thanks for inviting me into this group! It is never too late to learn to ride. One of our three sons did not learn as a child. He seemed afraid and would not try. So we finally just forgot about it. This year at age 37 he learned! He said he was embarrassed that he could not go riding with his two sons. So he bought a bike and persevered until he could ride (was really proud of himself). We quietly laughed that this fellow who is a research physicist with army was proudest of the fact that he learned to ride a bike! So never too late!

Big Grin yes, never too late...... and Rolling on the floor laughing about him being a research physicist with the army and not knowing how to ride!
Well, I'm 58 and WILL learn! I will have an advantage in that I will have an instructor to help me past the nervousness. My only thing is, I suddenly realized people are expecting me to start riding in traffic...... Now, I'm a good CAR driver, but don't know about being a traffic BIKE rider. There are some crazy motorists on the roads, and they don't respect bicyclists! I'd thought of only going on bike trails (of which there are a lot in Calgary). There are bike lanes on the streets, and they're enforceable, but I don't think that cars keep out of them. I can't quite see me in a median lane, turning left in traffic.

Melanie - I should introduce you to the group

Tallulah = Susan

Anna & Maridell are new to the group too, and their names are self-explanatory Big Grin

personally, even though I rode a bike (men's bike at that) for years, I wouldn't ride in the city streets unless it was the side streets that didn't have much traffic. Just passing someone around here on a bike gives me the willies as I can just picture a person losing their balance and falling in front of me. We have lots of colleges here and the kids are always on bikes, not to mention the annual ride that takes a weekend, and goes thru the city streets after dark. Great fundraiser, but jeez, sounds like accidents waiting to happen.
We have a couple of friends that took up bike riding as a way to see the countryside, travel alot of miles, and have no fear. They absolutely love it and will ride from city to city, checking out the sites and finding new friends. I'll just take a recumbent bike that doesn't move off the floor, please... Thumbs up

If you decide you must, please take all the precautions and remember that you have to watch out for the ones that AREN"T watching for you!
