I've been looking at our local YMCA, both for Joyanna (swim lessons, maybe, or something more bouncy) and for myself. We'll see. I've never been a "gym person," but I am a sociable sort, so maybe I've just been missing out.

I can't go to the gym 1st thing in the am anymore, as I'm at work so early - catch the bus at 6am to get there. WAY too early for me Rolling on the floor laughing
There's a gym at work, and showers too, but they're on different floors!! (basement & first) Can't see myself running around in my gym clothes, on the elevator, to go to the showers! I'll work it out, I guess....... Whistling

Maybe you can find a gym time that works for you & a couple of coworkers also... that way, you'll be in good company on the elevator heading for the showers!

Good to hear from everybody!

Jill, I never thought I would enjoy a class but the social part is nice. And I decided that the people I want to meet will not care if I have the fancy gym clothes etc. They probably have daycare for Joyanna, do they? It feels good to get more limber and strong..
Susan, you do have my sympathy on trying to fit it in- at least some extra walking? Hand weights in the cubicle? I've done squats and lunges at the desk - carefully, making sure nobody sees!!

I've stuck with my classes pretty well but the holidays do throw a wrench in all kind of regular activities!

Dorothy you're our best cheerleader!

I live and exercise vicariously through you guys...since I can't do it bause of my health...but in my heart I would love to be able to walk even a block, bend and touch my toes...knees is as far as I get..and that is limited due to my pulmonary hypertension...its the pits...

So ladies and gents, keep up those fun nature walks, gym workouts and get healthier for 2013. And, I will get out the pom poms and cheer, cheer, cheer you all on to victory.

Rolling on the floor laughing I sure couldn't do exercises at my cubicle..... much too public!
There is a set of stairs near my desk (fire-exit type) that people use, and I shall start to do so when I return to work tomorrow (well today now........)
Geeze, it's after 1am, and I can't sleep. I get up at 4:30 and am having trouble sleeping.
Ah well, maybe I can get to sleep early tonight, and catch up.
I certainly didn't get many days of sleeping in over the holidays - 1 day, actually. Every day that could be worked, Bob did. I gave him a ride to work, and he started at 7am, so we got up at 4:30 then too. And of course on days when we had company I got up early to cook and get ready for them. So tired.... Blinking

Well, I fell off the wagon majorly back in November. And December was the absolute pits. I developed sciatica and that HURTS. Imagine every muscle & tendon in your left leg either on fire or numb.. or both! Ever had something that was both numb and on fire? That's what I've had for 4 weeks now straight. I still walk and tonight I'm going to the gym for the first time in a few weeks. I'll just walk gently on a treadmill or elliptical, nothing major. Hoping that walking in the heat will help rather than walking around in the cold (cold aggravates IMO). But I try not to let it slow me down!
Never be afraid of a scar. It just means that you were stronger than something that tried to hurt you.

Toni...I also have Sciatica and learned the hard way how to treat it. In its acute stage bed rest with legs over a pillow...you want to not lay straight out...its the same as standing up...uses the same muscles. If you sleep on your side..fetal position with a folded blanket or comfortable pillow between your knees. While in bed apply cold packs every 20minutes...like this..20 minutes against the hot spot (which is usually in the buttocks) and 20 minutes off...while awake...for 24 hours...then if you use a chiropracter go and get an adjustment to take pressure off your pelvic girtle. Once the hot spot cools...you will be able to walk better and then from then on...just pay attention to any discomfort in that area and use ice again and adjustments.

This is the only thing that keeps it in check. The condition can occur just roling over in bed, or bending to pick up something from the floor...it can not be cured but we can keep it in check. The sciatic nerve runs across your lower pelvic back to mid point of the buttocks and down the legs to the heel.

Dorothy - Tried the ice route.. just ended up in so much pain I couldn't take it. I don't tolerate ice against my skin at all, burns soooo badly. Been double dosing on my magnesium (Alive! vitamins & Essential Labs Ionic Fizz Magnesium Plus drink.. nasty as anything bleh!) plus using Hyland's Leg Cramps cream & having DH massage it in (ooh, butt massage!! but too pained for any hanky panky :( ). Back in '08, I slipped on some ice & blew out 3 disks in my lower back & broke my tailbone, just waiting patiently (NOT!) for my new insurance to kick in (today?) so I can see a dr & get an MRI done to see if I've lost one of the disks completely (I was warned that could happen). If so, what to do, what to do? And actually standing straight/laying straight is the only way that it doesn't hurt like hell. I was doing great until I slipped on some ice on Christmas & pulled every tendon in my left leg.. that's what the pain is coming from right now. I've gotten to the point I can ignore the nerve pain, but the pulled tendons.. ouchie.

Toni it sounds like you have more going on then just the sciatic nerve...I hope that you can get to a Dr. and that MRI and find out just how extensive the problem is and what can be done for it....I will keep you in my thoughts and good wishes for a good recovery. Lovey dubby Group hug

What a nice group we have. Tallulah. Steps are a great way to get into shape, if you don't have knee problems and there are some leg exercises that can be done one is to stand with your heels sticking over the ledge of the step and lower them so you stand with your toes higher than the heel then lift up so you are balanced on your toes. Do a set of 10 or 12. Great stretching exercise.
Skiekitty, I had an injury a few years ago badly pulled a muscle in my hip while water-skiing. Dr though I might have torn a tendon and it may have reattached improperly. So he sent me to Physical Therapy, I got the range of motion back, lost the pain and there was also some lower back pain especially when on my knees in the garden that they cleared up working on a muscle that runs across the lower back. Sounds like you issues are much more serious than I had but maybe if you do have sciatica as well as the disk problem you might get some relief from some PT when you get your insurance settled.

I purchased the Dr Fuhrman Eat To Live book. Not sure I will use many of the recipes. Some of them do sound like they would be good but I will have to do some shopping to get the ingredients. It would be a big diet change for us, each meal is full of anti oxidants to boost the immune system. If any of you have been looking at this book I would be glad to share it with you and can post more recipes if you are interested. Here is a sample of one of them. Other than the
balsamic vinegar, garlic and romaine lettuce I don't have any of those other ingredients in the house.
Pom-Salad with figs and pumpkin seeds
Serves: 2
Preparation Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
FOR THE DRESSING:
1/2 cup pomegranate juice
1/3 cup Dr. Fuhrman's Black Fig Vinegar or balsamic vinegar
2 dates, pitted
1 tablespoon chopped shallots
1 clove garlic
1/2 cup raw pumpkin seeds

FOR THE SALAD:
5 cups romaine lettuce
2 cups arugula
1 cup radicchio
1 cup dried unsulfured figs, soaked overnight, then sliced
1/4 cup raw pumpkin seeds, toasted*
1/4 cup pomegranate kernels (if in season)

Instructions:
Blend dressing ingredients in a food processor or high powered blender. Toss lettuce, arugula and radicchio with figs and dressing. Sprinkle with pumpkin seeds and if available, pomegranate kernels.

*Toast pumpkin seeds in a heavy skillet over medium high heat, stirring frequently, until seeds are puffed and beginning to brown, 2-4 minutes. Transfer to a large plate to cool.
