February 2008 Blooms: In late February, I went to Clegg's nursery and bought some flowers. Bougainvillea, Impatients, Ivy Geraniums. Petunias. And a Begonia from Walmart. I like pink. Can you tell? :) ![]() ![]() ![]() (Tip) Never purchase flowers in February. Always wait until after the last freeze in March. I later found out that the owner of the nursery had gone to Florida and brought those back with him. ![]() ![]() ![]() With all of the pretty flowers I purchased, the greatest thrill for me was seeing the first signs of life on my tree February 15th. Funny, I had lived here for years and had never noticed. ![]() |

May 2008 . In May of 08, I went to a DG Round Up, to Forest Hills Nurseries, to a Master Gardener plant sale and everyone on DG was sending the newbee plants and my garden was filling up. PROGRESSION OF MY FLOWER BEDS For close ups, please click on the Photos My kidney shaped bed with a walkway to no where. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also in May, came my Red Knockout Roses. One day I went to Lowes and I purchased one Red Knockout rose bush. I planted it in my kidney bed. It did so well, so quickly, I went back the next week, to purchase a few more. When I got to Lowes, there was a palet of them on the sidewalk and their leaves where parched and they were all shriveled up. I asked the manager what they were going to do with them. She said they were so bad off, they would probably throw them away. I asked her how much she would charge me if I purchased the entire palet. $ 2.00 each!!! Well, I had no idea that there were 42 bushes on the palet, but I bought them all anyway. As a new gardener, I had no idea what to do to recoup them. The Lord lead me to put on my rose gloves and just strip the leaves off each stem. Put them in the shade and give them water. In just a few days they all started putting out new leaves. I was ecstatic. After they all recovered and began blooming, on May 13th, 2008, I planted 21 in my island bed around my palm tree. I had no idea they would grow so big, so quickly. I eventually transplanted all but 7 to other areas in my garden. The balance of the 42, I was able to give away as gifts. What a find! First planted earlier in May .During the month I added black edging and Bleeding Hearts and Mulch. Right photo was taken May 27th. ![]() ![]() Then I decided to change the bed directly behind the house. Instead of keeping it straight, I shaped it in a large curve to match my kidney bed. At the same time I decided to put edging between my stones and my mulch on my kidney bed. ........................Straight bed.................................Curved instead......................................See all the little knockouts in pots at the upper left? ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyway, both the left curved bed and the right curved kidney bed formed a balanced opening to my garden. This also began the first of many, many bags of white rocks for my pathway. It took a few years of purchasing two or three bags everytime I went to walmart. But it got finished eventually. ..........................May 14th....................................May 25th more rocks.....................May 26th and more..................................May 27th.......... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mandevillas were growing great. I had no idea how tall they would grow. Please click the photo for height. ![]() ![]() And my new found Bulbs from Caladiums4less. They reproduce quickly and grow quickly. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wandering Jews and Sweet Potato plants ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ..................Elaine....................................................Oleanders...............................................................Peace Roses in May ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() May 26th Garden...........Still much to do. ![]() |
