Taking some photos of some of my plants, outside, that are "going bush"...living on their own and naturalized. Most would be horrified by the state of the leaves which are often bitten, chewed, exposed to too much sun etc...but these plants still bloom like crazy.
The 'conditions'? Rains almost every night and cool temps at night in the winter (lowest about upper 50s) and days in the 70s. Summers are warmer but temp usually not above 83 here. Our altitude as 900'.
This first one, H. purpureofusca, is way high up a tree and has been living out there for about 5 years. I still have the pot hanging somewhere, but the vine has grown out of it and is now naturalized in those trees along with H. meliflua ssp. fraterna, H. deykeii, H. obovata and H. cominsii...Oh I think H. sp. Tanna is up there too!

H. pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' growing up a palm tree trunk in full sun. I have a number of them growing like this...the leaves are sunburnt and they bloom almost all of the time!!! The hoya grows up the tree and then starts to hang down and bloom....
Oh my Carol, I love the way you are able to let them just "go back to nature" in the trees. I really like the first one, pink, LOL tongue in check. I am curious like Dom, once they do this, they leave the pot?

Yes...except for the eriostemmas, they all start growing ON the tree, rock etc. and the pot seems incidental...just there. If there isn't much foliage in the pot...I take it away. There is a HUGE clump of bamboo outside the porch, and I have put a bunch of pots around it...growing up: erythrostemma, kenejiana, amoena, pottsii, australis, acuta...and am going to put more....they really have fun on/in/over the trees... Will post more photos...

I had H. motoskei growing in a huge shrubby tree off the porch...and one of the major trunks rotted and broke off today...and we had to untangle about 9' of hoya vine ... (can't bear to waste anything). This is one of the 'impressions' left by the vine on a 1" thick branch....the grip of death!!!

H. motoskei had been growing under that tree, planted in a big pot with an upside down tomato cage for a trellis. It just loved it under there....dark and moist...bloomed all year!!! When, after the big trunk broke, I moved the pot, and in 6 months it has grown thru the pot and into the ground. Look at the root ball under the pot....
Carol your 5 headed peduncle is amazing! I just want one!!! Also I can't get over the incredible strength of the H. motoskei vine to make such a groove in tree's branch!!
Carol, your pictures look absolutely gorgeous. Lush and happy plants. Probably better than what they can do in their 'natural' areas. They seem to like your place better. ... can't blame them.
It is a treat to see your pictures. Looking forward to more.
