I would like to know what everyone does when they get cuttings that are dehydrated. Do you have a favorite soaking recipe. Do you recommend rainwater over tap water, VF-11 or Superthrive, sugar, honey? For how long and does the species of hoya make a difference or severity of dehydration? Regina, good questions. First off, tap water generally has a lot of chemicals in it...flouride, etc....which tropicals are often dislike. If you let the water sit out...decant...for 24-48 hours, the checmicals generally flash off...rain water is best, I think. I generally soak in water with some sugar...or superthrive if I have it. I have never seen any benefit from VF-11 but that is just me. I also found some clear plastic bowl covers which I put over the pots, like a dome, to keep the humidity in. The really thin leafed hoyas like dennisii, or odorata are the kind that simply don't recover easily..... I know the Canadians have a lot of problems due to boxes taking so long thru customs...hope they chime in.... Leap. The net will appear. |

Thanks Carol......rainwater and superthrive I have. Cuttings will have an estimated 12 days since they were cut and started their journey. Tried my best to select the thicker leafed species, but a first time doing a consignment. Bit unsure how long to soak them, don't want to end up waterlogging them and turning them to mush. I have soaked them overnight with no harm. Is it humid where you are? Most of David Liddles' cuttings I always soaked overnight... except for the really succulent ones. Let us know what you have and how the purchase went? Leap. The net will appear. |

Definitely humid here and have a rooting aquarium for humidity too. Will post a picture and list when they arrive in the next day or two and when I know for sure what I have. Flowers leave some of their fragrance in the hand that bestows them. - Chinese proverb |

I have well water - which is spring water as they hit the spring when they were digging the well. It is a deep water well, anyway I use this and make sure it is a little warm and a little bit of sugar. I do this for several hours sometimes overnight, depending how dehydrated they are. I should be getting my Liddle order today. Anxious to see how they have done. |

Thanks Dee......I have rain barrels I collect the rain in and the water will be warm. I've read bits and pieces about the sugar, but don't really know what the purpose is. Does it have antibacterial properties? I know honey does...... Flowers leave some of their fragrance in the hand that bestows them. - Chinese proverb |

Plants need adequate carbohydrates (sugars) to root and bloom... Leap. The net will appear. |

Not sure how the sugar gets in...but I hear it works. Superthrive works too....but it is costly. HORMEX is the same as Superthrive plus it has some antifungal stuff in it...so I use it to dip in to propagate AND like Superthrive. Leap. The net will appear. |

HHmmmm........Hormex huh.....I looked it up in a product catalog I have from a local hydroponics store and it said it ....... Helps minamize stress using a special blend of minerals and other helpful ingredients. . Can be applied to the rooting medium and sprayed over young clones......and it does cost alot less than superthrive! Cuttings arrived today......I have them soaking in rainwater and superthrive. They looked pretty good for being cut the week of the the 4th and shipped on the 5th. Flowers leave some of their fragrance in the hand that bestows them. - Chinese proverb |

Where are your cuttings from? They look FUN! Leap. The net will appear. |

My cutting are from the David and Iris Marie Liddle collection. I soaked them for 8 hours and then potted them up that evening. I recieved a total of 14 cuttings out of the 18 I ordered. I did cut the vines into smaller pieces...2 to 3 nodes, some a few more, depending on their size and number of leaves. Here they are after I was finished. Hi everyone, Greetings from Brazil. First of all I would like to inform that my English is not so good, so please sorry about my English mistakes ok? I have this problem when ordering from overseas, in Brazil we only have few species, most are carnosas. Sometimes my cuts take more than a month to arrive, right now I'm waiting for one from Thailand that is at custom since Jan 31! Probably they are all dead. I soak my cuts with vitamin B, and most of the time they look ok, but if the cuts takes more than 30 days, the lost is always more than 75% of the order. |
