Name: Carol Noel Hawaii (near Hilo) It's all about choices.
Doesn't tell me in my growing book, Dom...but the cooler the better...warm days, cool nights. Likes highish elevations, lots of water... Soil around 5.0-7.0pH. Do you get really hot there in the summer? Does say it will tolerate light frost but does not like intense summer heat and harsh winds. Our average temp. here is 79deg. F...
There's 2 types of coffee, arabica and robusta. One will cope with higher temps than the other. I had one which had grown up under a large tree (Raintree) before I owned the place. The previous owner cut down the Raintree just before I bought. The coffee tree went down hill and finally expired. Not that it worried me. I can't even stand the smell of coffee.
We get short very hot spells and where I live on the island, we get some strong winds. Prob might be the blossoms being damaged by the winds. Some parts of the island have huge Avacado and Mango trees with no probs, but Im told where I live, the blossoms wont stand a chance. Ive planted one anyhow in a sheltered spot and will try. Might be the same prob for the coffee
Great entry Carol!
I love, love, love my cuppa coffee, and I love the plant too. How can you not love the beautiful shiny leaves and fragrant little flowers?
For those of you that have never tried it, it makes an easy houseplant too. Drinks a lot of water, but it's easy and grows fast. And, it will flower and set its little coffee cherries in the house without a pollenator.
Dom, it grows it Arabia and Yemen, and can take some harsh conditions if it gets the water. I've seen them growing in bare lava rock with a drip system...
Carol, do you know what kind of stock your original plants came from?
Amazing presentation, thanks Carol. The fermentation buckets look a bit rank, and I can see why they attract knats! The end product is WELL worth it though!
I wonder if I could try an indoor coffee tree??....mmm, possibly too many hoyas..
