I have only seen some posts of this fellow on some forums and his English is iffy at best....wonder who did his research? I am tempted to buy it just for the hell of it!!! Carol ![]() Leap. Hi Carol, Are you talking about the book Hoya Catalogue offered by the guy in Jupiter, Fl. ? I have a good friend who has purchased and traded hoya's with this Russian fellow in the past and they have stated his ID's have been correct so far. Sooooo I thought I would take a chance and order the book a few days ago, since he is somewhat local to me and check it out. I'm hoping there will be a preface included with acknowledgements of those who assisted in the writing of this book. ![]() I was thinking the same thing Dom...... Will have to watch for her critique.......I'm sure it will be quite colorful too. Regina Flowers leave some of their fragrance in the hand that bestows them. - Chinese proverb |

I am thinking of ordering it...just so I know what everyone is talking about!!! He sent me a pdf of some of the pages and they are OK...not too many errors. He took the IPNI list, changed the type faces to something very flourishy and added photos and cultivars....that's why there are over 600entries. Clever way to do it...but so many of the names are obsolete, changed, not valid. Hmmmmm yes....Ms. B may blow a gasket over this one!!!! ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

He sent me a pdf of 3 pages with maybe 10 hoyas listed and there were 2 blatant errors. I may just critique it but in a constructive way...too many people believe everything they read or watch on TV and this is where lots of muddle comes from when people give misquided information. Carol Edited to say that from what I can guess, he simply took IPNI list (see our database) added some cultivars and added photos of plants he had or could get photos of. Already a Thai grower has said that the photos of the H. bella leaf looks like bilobata or visaversa... I do advise No one buy it (its a lot of money) until more information is found.... Leap. Shucks - I wish someone would come out with a really great, all conclusive hoya book. I personally liked the last book to come out by botanova. But a more complete book would be really nice. A lot of work yes, but it would be great... |

Paula...I agree. But as with any relating to taxonomy there simply are no definitive areas and they are constantly changing. Horticulture is a different story...more emphasis could be given there...but... Any genus or family worthy of writing a book about would be full of errors before it were finished due to the changes found constantly.... Now...a book with pictures giving the name/names and the stories about why there is a confusion would be interesting. I'm afraid as long as Ms. Burton is around, no one is going to stick their neck out just to get chopped off. Leap. The net will appear. |

Hmm, I thought I had read somewhere that Queenphish is a female somewhere in Florida. Guess I am confused. Dee |

I think this book photo may not correct when I compare with The Genus Hoya for Hoya bilobata leaf and The stemma Volume 1 Issue #3 for Hoya bella leaf. Songkran |

Hmmmm I will have to look at them all togetgher. I bought the book...just to know. Songkranupa, I know you have some wonderful photos of collections of leaves and flowers... Would you consider loading them onto the database under the appropriate species??? I love your photos!!!! Aloha, Carol Leap. The net will appear. |

Yes, I will to loading them onto the database and which photo may not correct please advise me again. Thank you for you love. Songkran |

Songkran...we will all do it together!!! I think this is how we learn, from cooperation. While I find comparisons of plants' "inner parts" to be interesting...I don't have the equipment to do it nor a whole lot of experience. But leaves, flowers, calyxes, growth patterns are a good way to begin!!! Also interesting in the Database is knowing how different people in different parts of the country are growing their plants.... You and I are lucky, we have many choices!!! Aloha ![]() Leap. I want to know, What parts which you want all my photo I can post in Database. First time I want to post front and behind of leaves, front, side and behind of flower, bud in my opinion it have variation follow time and sharp then I don't want to post. For inner parts, What the part do you want?. Calyx, corola, corona, pollinarium, cross section of flower growth pattern I will share my growth condition. Songkran |
|
|||
Songkran...I don't understand what you mean to say..."it have variation follow time and sharp then I don't want to post". I think that for the usual grower, who would like to us the Database to ID their hoya, the external visible parts of the flower are the most helpful... I find the calyx important, as well as the shape of the coronal lobes from the top/side/bottom. Most coronas are easy, but some have a special characteristic that makes them unique. Another thing I find useful is knowing the 'range' of the leaf size...as many plants have different size leaves and, infact, different shaped bases and apexes. When the size range is small, then it isn't important, but when they can vary from 3cms to 9-12cms it IS important, I think. I received that Hoya Catalogue today and I am disappointed. It could have been SUCH a wonderful publication, but it falls very short of that. There are few pictures, mostly of leaves and I find them too dark to reall tell what it is. What I really think also, is that if a certain hoya is often confused with another, or if it has been called something else by someone, that too should be mentioned. Don't you? Leap. Hi Caral, I'm sorry. My english is not good. "it have variation follow time and sharp then I don't want to post" means bud have evolution (you can see in my album 'Evolution of Hoya flower in facebook') then when I take photo start of bud and end of bud may not same. So I don't want to post bud photo. I think same you for charecteristic of leaf. In my Hoya finlaysonii have short and very large in same pot. In the next time may I show you. Hoya leytensis have round and elliptic leaf in same pot. you can see in my post at Thailandhoyaclub http://www.thailandhoyaclub.com/webboard/index.php?topic=351... I don't understand you said 'What I really think also, is that if a certain hoya is often confused with another, or if it has been called something else by someone, that too should be mentioned. Don't you?' Songkran |

AH...very good point you make about the buds of the flower. I see our Database as a good "central" information area for the hobby grower and not an in depth taxonomic study. I leave that kind of information for the 'big guys' like Michele Rhodda and YOU!!! To explain my comment: if a plant, like H. burtoniae, for instance, is also known as H. sp. DS 120 and that it has also had the name H. XYZ, that should be written under that plants' information. DS120 is probably not correct....I forget....maybe it is DS70???? ![]() Carol Leap.
