I know that some Hoyas like to be potted up more often, they need root room...danged if I can remember which ones though ![]() |
|

One I know is H. magnifica. There are others, and surely the reason I lost a few this past winter. ![]() Christine |

I'm thinking my cv. sunrise might appreciate it...but I'm not sure if it's decline is from needing a bigger pot or from my chaotic winter watering habits. |

Hmmmm Some that like a bit more room around their toes and are powerful eaters are magnifica, aff. albiflora, calycina, imperialis - in my experience. Some might be ready for a bigger pot when the roots get so packed the water simply runs down the edges of the pot fooling us into thinking they are saturated. I tip my hoyas out of the pot often...only way to make sure they are OK. One of the indicators is when you tip it out and the bottom roots are all gone... indicates that those roots got SO dry they died and then when watered, they rotted.... ![]() Leap. Here is one I just repotted, because it just dried out too often. I just lost the new growing tip, because I could not keep up with the watering. As you can see, the roots needed a little more room. to stretch out.![]() This is H. monetteae that I am hoping finally starts showing some good growth this summer. |

uh oh...now I have to find a supplier of 5 or 6 inch hanging pots...I bought 50 or so little 4 inch hanging pots, never occurred to me that I might need some a size or 2 bigger ![]() |

LA...you might contact Christina on myhoyas.com ... the Swedish collectors live in small rooms and 'root prune' instead of potting UP...then they get to go back to the original pot. Would be interesting to know what she says about it.... Leap. The net will appear. |

I've noticed that a lot Carol with my plants.....You can get a pot full of roots that have rotted back..never occured to me it might be that. Because I grow outside, and you're never totally in control of the watering.ie, inclement weather, I've erred on the side of caution with clay pots, but Im actually finding now an open basket with a very free draining medium kept damp, works better for mine than in a constricted clay pot. It just dries out too quickly. Live and learn...adapt to your climate and growing conditions. Maybe in another 10 years I'll get it right.:)) |

3G Lee Anne; Found 6 inch hanging baskets w/ nylon rope hangers @ dollarama for $1.25 or I made some really cool nylon rope pot holders, that were super easy. Just pop a regular pot into them & hang like so! edited: my picture of my hand-made hanger w/ dollarama pot! ![]() "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |

Nice hangers!!!!! I'm beginning to take notice (MORE notice) of the weight of the pots...especially the bigger ones. That's usually my first clue..... ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

Thank-you Carol, but I've edited the post. My hanger is identical, but the pic is borrowed. However, I'd love to send you one, if you're interested! I use weight to determine if it's time to water, but that only works with plastic! Question: How & what do you determine by pot weight? Heavy & dry = lots of roots? If it seems still light after watering. I 'heft' it before watering...then if the weight doesn't seem to have changed much...I am suspicious and often tip it out of the pot. ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

ahhh, yes. That would indicate water running thru, but not holding.... I'm afraid it may be time to pot-up my carnosa tricolour. Will she die on me if I don't? It's been blooming it's fool head off, and I'm worried... ![]() And just curious- is $34.99 good for 50L of hydroton? ![]() "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |

It would be for me....that's what I pay here.... Leap. The net will appear. |

Well...I have to buy a new bag tomorrow so I can give you a better update. WE are really hosed on prices out here!!!! Leap. The net will appear. |

Shoot! I guess so, huh? ![]() ![]() I'm sure everything is marked up to cover shipping to the island! I didn't think the cost was too bad, as I priced it out on line, and it was the same. I was impressed with the rockwool, though. I could buy a bag of pre-cut ones for $11 or a big slab for $9. I bought the slab.... Well I sure don't want to rot & destroy my Liddle order on a $9.00 slab of rockwool... "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |
