What's your method of growing H. curtisii? Who's had success with blooming? Where do you keep yours? What exposure? Temperature? I've just purchased an EA H. curtisii, Thanks to Perrenial Girl, who helped me track one down locally! Now, if I can figure out how to keep it alive! ![]() "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |

I have no luck with this Hoya...it has sat in a pot for 4 years and has not moved, grown, flowered nor spoken to me. |
|
|||
Just the fact that it's still alive in a pot is luck, Dom. I have killed two, even killed the cuttings I took on the last one that was dying! |

I've been lucky with H. curtisii....and have grown the same HUGE pot of it for years. It's one that NEVER likes to be dry so in an EA mix it will probably grow well tho' I find their mix too goopy for me. It LOVES bright indirect/direct light (it was rediscovered years ago after a hurricane hit the island of Palawan in the Philippines....on a tree that had blown down. It was living up in the tops of the trees where it got really bright indirect light as opposed to the forest floor which is shady). I have it in an 8" pot and it has grown in a ball shape around the pot...giving enough shade to the pot that it doesn't dry out too quickly. When I water it I lower it into a bucket so the entire plant gets drenched. Mounting cuttings on tree fern bark (with spagnum moss between the cuttings and the bark) also works...and it needs to be moistened regularly. Hope this helps.... ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

Cool, I really do like it and one of these days I will see one at Lowes again and buy it so thanks, Carol. |

Thanks for your input. Greatly appreciate it, Dom, Randy & Carol. ![]() This hoya is loaded with new growth, making tons of new leaves, and seems well established. The other night I found 2 peduncles on my curtisii. Don't look like they're busy, yet, but I will post pics later today. Then last night, I found a few yellowed leaves. As I investigated, a fungus gnat took flight, and drunkenly flew away... ![]() ![]() ![]() Up here in the northern climbs, should this hoya be getting direct light? |

I would give it direct light....especially there in the north where the sun isn't very strong. Here it gets direct sun for a couple of hours in the late morning...![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

Mine dont look like that ![]() |

Well, here's what this one looks like: ![]() ![]() Now, the trick will be keeping it looking this way! ![]() "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |

It WILL get dried vines on the interior because of lack of light...not to worry...if you keep pulling the vines down you won't get them. Wonderful growing!!!!!!! ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

I wish I could take the credit, though! ![]() ![]() Hadn't had to water it yet because it's STILL soo dang soaked. Last night I used a suggestion I found in the forum, about wicking the moisture out with paper towels? It's helped, that's for sure! ![]() "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |

Good idea abouting using the paper towels as a wick. |

Still have not had to water this hoya. Basket is like a lead weight, but becomming lighter.... New leaves are still yellowing... ![]() I tipped it out of the pot, and there's no "loose" potting meduim. Placed a single layer of hydroton on the bottom of the basket, to encourage air circulation... Stuck a couple of slips into a pot of hibiscus, and be d'mned, it rooted in days! ![]() I don't want to lose this handsome Hoya. Try taking a whiff of the roots...they should smell woodsy but not 'rotted'. If you can find any roots in the soil, are they healthy or will the cuticle of the root (the covering) rub off when you roll the root between two fingers.... If there is rot or bad roots, I would start all over...but root the whole mat of vines on a flat surface like tree fern bark and keep it humid..... Leap. The net will appear. |
|
|||
Roots appeared to be white and firm, and many.....I'll take another look & sniff, to be sure... Touch cuticles, roll roots.... hope I'd notice rotten smelling. ![]() I quit smoking over 10 weeks ago, & my sniffer is now ultra sensitive. Offensive-sensitive? I walk in the door after work, and I can smell the garbage, teens' BO, DH's feet, bounce sheets, carnosa in bloom, dog, dust, smokey DH..... And then I start throwing open windows... ![]() ![]() "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |

GOOD ON YA"!!!!!! Glad you quit the weed...man, that is SO hard!!! I did it nearly 35 years ago...3 packs a day!!! Is the soil around the roots realls mushy...like mud? Hope not. Hang on, Snoopy...we'll take care of it.... ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

Likes really really bright indirect light.... Leap. The net will appear. |

Thanks Carol. I've re-potted it and moved it, although there's NO chance of 'really really bright indirect light' today! We've had a 10degreeC drop in temperature from yesterday, and its as dark as mid-winter! Just had a shower of rain - only our 3rd since March (yes, its like a dust bowl out there) Saying that, the unusually warm start to the year has brought my hoyas to life. Some that I have never flowered before have peduncles forming....mindorensis, globulosa, verticillata and wightii ssp palniensis. Regular flowerers are also going crazy. I've over 20 peduncles on my carnosa, and obovata is looking good too. ![]() |

On the up-swing, finally. ![]() Carol, it must have been hard to kick that weed at three packs a day. ![]() How many tries did it take? I'd love to hear your tale! Maybe we should open a thread under O/T. This is the second time I've REALLY quit. 11 Weeks tonight. June 22 will be three months. Sounds fantastic JulieK! Way to grow! Dom's too funny with his description of his "snobby" hoya! I snorted when I read that... ![]() "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |
