Thought I would start a discussion about this hoya, as it is so gorgeous and the name confuses me. I got it from DL as H. chuniana and then when asked, he told me the proper name is H. chunii. BTW: the 'ending' of a name is very important as it identifies more about the collector/describer and/or what the plant is named for. Rather confusing, i.e. xxxxxxxoides = very similar to xxxxxxxx. Any one out there with more information? ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

Carol, I looked in Ander's book and he says it was named for someone by name of Chun but he did not collect it therefore it can't have the ii ending. S o according to the authours of The Genus Hoya it's H.chuniana. I browsed further and found some other hoya's that might/must be misnamed. For instance H.madulidii was collected by a man by name of Bolster in 1906, (according to Dale's book of hoyas) Also Tsangii. I'm pretty sure Peter Tsang did not collect that plant and so it goes on. We will all have to ask our favorite experts I think. Dorothy. Dorothy. |

Wow...yes...there are so many ending with ii that aren't described by the collector. Christina...do you know Anders? Can you ask him? Carol Leap. The net will appear. |

Saturday on the hoya meeting I got into half a discussion about this hoya with Torill, but there seems to be so much confusion about it that I don't remember half of what was said! I bought my plant in 1999 and it came with the "name" sp. PNG 4 and was said to have dark red flowers and I fell for that. Well, it took about 2 years before it bloomed and the flowers sure were't red. ![]() ![]() Will try to talk to Torill some more after all the meetings and her trip is over by the end of August. Edited to add that the whole confusion and photos of my plant can be found here: http://www.myhoyas.com/chuniana-min.htm |
