Hi, I am new to the cubit and Hoya. Trying to learn. Can someone please help with the information about this variety? I am in South Florida.
Need info about cold tolerance, watering needs, growth rate and light needs. Any thing else you think will be good for me to know ?
Posted request on Aloha Hoya too .
Thanks a lot.
Hoya crassicaulis is also called Hoya incrassata. I think the latter is the correct name as it was published first....but I leave the label H crassicaulis on the plant because it came with that label and until the powers that be determine otherwise, I'll keep it like that. Its a very nice hoya....large stiff leaves, flowers constantly and I really like the scent, tho it is difficult to describe. Very fresh, almost like a spicy soap.
For me very easy to grow.........I let it dry out then put the hose into the basket till it pours out
Grows in fits and starts. This is mine after 4 years to show you this size you will get. I'm expecting this to grow into a big plant
This is a better photo actually which I loaded up into the database earlier, but can't find my copy here at home. Gives a better idea of the plant's growth and size
Mine grows outside, albeit under shade cloth to potect most from direct sunlight and wind, but it is at the top of the shade house, so gets a lot of slightly filtered sun light
My lowest night temperature I've recorded in winter is 55º, but thats only for a couple of nights, normally its around 60º min in the winter, and about 75º in the summer. Daytimes in the winter around 75º and summers around 90º, but on occasional days that goes up to about 120º, but not for long........thankfully.
So, I've never pushed any of my Hoyas to an minimum extreme, so cant help on the actual minimum temperature
Thanks a lot Dominic. That answers my question. Here in South Florida. night temp can dip down to 40 degree F. I may have to either bring it under the patio or inside the house if it gets that cold.Untill that time comes,it will enjoy nice temps outside.
Wow, your crassicaulis is gorgeous Dom! Mine's 4 years old and has grown about 6 feet long, but only one stem so far, and no flowers. My plant also has much darker leaves likely because it doesn't get as much light as yours. Where did you get yours Dom? Curious because that's the name mine came with, and I got it from Paul Shirley. I'll add incrasata to its tag too.
I think link from Lee Anne addresses moisture and light levels that many varieties grow in.
I have found info scattered on many sites. A newbie like me finds it difficult but also fun (and tempting) to get the info. Then I got to figure out how all that stuff translates to area I grow my plants in.More fun..
Just looking at various Hoya websites and found some have Hoya crassicaulis and incrassata as 2 different varieties.I am confused now....is it same thing or 2 different varieties???
I bought a crassicaulis which is starting to putout buds.
I wonder if it will bloom or drop buds,it is outside hiding in a tree which is also located in a sheltered place. I hesitate bringing it in,might drop leaves and buds due to change in environment.
Name: Carol Noel Hawaii (near Hilo) It's all about choices.
The names of hoyas are constantly in question... If you have a question about how it looks in order to make up your own mind, you should ask for a picture...ask for a picture of both. Ask them where their plants come from. Some dealers have no more idea than you do and put any old name on anything.... Know what you are looking for and make your decisions with knowledge, not hope....
