Has anyone used Rockwool for Hoya cuttings before? We have a Hydroponic store in town finally, and I stopped by to see what they had in the way of Hydroton ( I was looking for the tiny size) Got to looking at the rock wool cubes for cuttings and thought it might be a great alternative especially for some harder to root ones. Any thoughts ? |

I've never tried it MJ, although I know it's widely used for growing orchids as well as for hydroponics. Its quite expensive over here, so always put me off. |

Yes...I tried it and was disappointed. The roots need looser medium...and they rotted easily...tried picking the rockwool off but the roots came off as well.... Leap. The net will appear. |

Umm, ok, I'll need to rethink this. I have used floral foam for live plants for rooting other kinds of plants, you cut it into very small cubes and you don't remove it, the roots just grow thru it and you pot it up right with the cutting. I was thinking this might work in the same manner, only better. Maybe I'll experiment with some of the carnosa's since they are so easy to root. |

Let me know how this goes. I did buy a slab of rockwool. $10 for a big slab! I tried it with hibiscus- no luck. Scared to try with hoya.... "When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other." - Chinese Proverb |

I used both and they did NOT work. Yes, at first I thought I had invented sliced bread...but as the plant grew... ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |
