It's all about choices.
I have been thinking about this for a long time....and have decided to DO it.

Nathalie, PNG, has been doing an incredible service to (1) the hearing and speaking impaired in PNG and (2) to the hoya world. My feeling is that I cannot thank Schlecter nor any of the other hoya collectors whom we profit from...we are enjoying the fruits of their labors and some of us who sell hoyas benefit from their efforts. I would like to collect donations to send to Nathalie...to help her in her life doing what we cannot (and probably don't have thecourage to do). PNG is about as remote and impoverished as they come...to say nothing of dangerous.

Last night we were watching the BBC Earth series and the segment called Strange Islands. They were reporting on a specific tree climbing kangaroo found only in PNG and in 3 short shots I saw H. callistophyla, D. geri and an unknown (to me) hoya with dark green leaves, large, with pinnate venation. It struck me, again, how remote this area is and how it is choking with hoyas and dischidia.

I would like to propose: I will set up a PayPal account in the name of Hooked on Hoya. Donations could be made there and they would be 110% anonymous

I wish I had thought of this before...Nathalie is funded by Grants and donations...I'm sure anything would help. There are very few learned folks going out in the bush collecting and growing out new species and I would like to help.

Whaddaya all think? Big Grin

I'm already donating money every month to her project. I don't know if there is any info about that on the English page of her project...? Can't seem to access her website at the moment.

I too, have set up a monthly donation to her work. GO Nathalie! Hurray!

Nathalie and her husband are doing such an amazing thing; we owe it to them to support them. Even if we never have the opportunity to grow any of the plants she discovers, it adds so much to the understanding of the genus, that every hobbiest really should consider aiding the work.

I know not everybody can, but if you are in a position to help her in her two important areas of work, PLEASE, PLEASE, do so. I will join the "Hooked on Hoyas" effort too.

Best Wishes to this effort!

How wonderful all ofyou are doing so much. Guess I am a bit slow on the uptake!!! I can set up an account and anybody can put what they can into it...when they can. When $200 - 300$ are available, I will be happy to transfer it to her site. Do you think my figures are too low? too high?

That's a great idea Carol one that I am sure Nathalie will appreciate.
Your idea is great for those not wishing to commit long term...enabling them to give in one lump sum.

I think what she's doing is so extraordinarily generous that SRQHoyas has also committed to two monthly contributions through the duration of the project!

Keep up the good work!!! Hurray! Thumbs up

I have made monthly contributions thru her website too, thats why I have received her newsletters.
I think what she is doing is superb, and how lovely she will eventually return home with a husband as well as hoyas :)

WOW, it's great to see that there is so much support here already for Nathalie's work!

I wonder if it would be possible to conduct a poll to see what we might do - see what cubit members think, and how much they might be ready to do.

Perhaps someone who is in contact with Nathalie would ask her what she would like to do that she now can not. If we had a specific project or goal it might be more motivational for potential donors. Maybe she needs new equipment, cameras, tents, and so forth. Maybe she would like to have some of her plants given testing by Livia Wanntorp for their genetic profiles. Maybe more money could fund travels to far parts of PNG. Maybe she just wants a bit more freedom to travel home to Sweden. Maybe she would extend her research if the funding stream was secure. Maybe she just would like a few more comforts for her current living situation. All of it seems worthy to me.

Anybody else have ideas?

Christina, I was able to find all the information on donating on the English side of her website at : http://www.paradiseforest.net/index-e.htm

It seems to be working for me now.

I wonder if someone here knows Nathalie Simonsson Juhonewe well and would be willing to write her on behalf of everyone at the Hooked on Hoyas Cubit?

Great, Carol; let's ask her what she needs at this point so we have a goal for fund-raising. You could use the suggestion list above, and add to it, if you like.

If you can get a list of what she needs i can set up a poll and we can all vote on what to shoot for if you'd like. Might be kind of fun to have an actual goal than just donating to donate.

In her last e-mail she sent out a few weeks ago, she listed some things they could use in PNG, but perhaps she only did that in the Swedish letter...?

I wrote to her...haven't heard back. I'm sure she would need the same things in English Whistling .... what did she list? I don't think a Boeing 747 is in the cards...but we'll see Big Grin

It's way too much to translate, so I hope she writes it also in the English letter. Smiling

Is there any movement on this initiative?

Has anyone heard from Nathalie? Has anyone received a newsletter in English lately?
