Nice picture! I ~think~ it's a sport of carnosa.
Probably H. carnosa cv. 'Chelsea' or cv. 'Krinkle-8'
(hope that's correctly laid out) *Blush*

thank you all very much,

I got it at lowe's.I have 7 Hoya's and i have found all of them except 1 at Lowes and believe it or not walmart, all except the one small variegated rope are from EA nursery.
I would love to get more but I'm beginning to have a hard time finding any i don't have. But EA nursery delivers to the lowe's & walmart's around here.I think they also sale the linearis i am waiting to find it.

I love finding the plants in 6 to 8 inch pots. But a hoya is a hoya as far as I'm concerned.
My Hoya 'carnosa' is having a hard time really babying it.If anyone knows any tricks to bringing one back please let me know I'd really appreciate it.

HI Jelinda... you might try yanking your plant out of the pot (no, don't worry...they are tough and you can stick it back in no problem) and checking if the roots are healthy or not. Healthy roots have a white or a white-ish brown color and if you roll them between your fingers the 'skin' (called the cuticle) doesn't come off.

UNhealthy roots show the 'skin' or cuticle rolling off exposing a thin thread of (dead) material.

WHAT TO DO? Easy...with some sharp clippers, snip the roots UP towards the plant until you reach roots that are healthy...and if there is a question do the finger rolling test again. As you get closer to the plant the roots should show some sap (carnosa sap is clear, not white).

NeXT??? 1) If you have some healthy roots, repot in a smaller pot (pot size based on root size, not plant size) in a loose mix with a wee bit of sugar in the water and a fertilizer with a higher 3rd number. Do not water to drown....spritz with wter if you can.

If the plant is really big and the roots you have left are small, trim the plant, root the cuttings. When the original plant is revived plant them all together and have even a bigger plant.

Carol, I have EA baskets and anticipate same problem down the road. How about dividing the plant by taking out a part of it with roots, putting some fresh soil in the pot where part of the plant was taken out from? That way,you can repot the part you took out in a new soil in a new pot/basket. And remainder of the plant in the basket will stretch it's legs....ummm ...spread it's roots in new medium .

I do this with some other plants that get too big . Many plants are devided this way, specially that develop roots along the stems, rhizomes, bulbs etc.

Do you think this will work with Hoyas?

It should work, Alka, as long as you rinse the roots off well. EA packs the dirt with little moisture retaining beads that keep the soil wet and while some in dry areas love it...I have never had an EA plant live very long here with our humidity which can go from 50% to 100% very quickly. I think making cuttings would work a lot better to build another plant. I have tried repotting a whole H. linearis from EA and it died...actually I killed 3 of them that way!!!! Whistling

Thanks for reply Carol. I have 3 EA baskets for a year now and they are thriving so far.Took some cuttings from 2 of them too (carnosa, wayettii) and they rooted well. I generally do not water these baskets for several days ,so may be that helps. They stay out in rain.It rains here almost daily and heavily for appx 2 months but thank God,plants were OK and actually perkier during that time. I did not know anything about Hoya at that time....ignorance is bliss. Rolling my eyes.
Now I worry if plants are underwatered or overwatered after reading stuff about them. Our humidity is pretty same as your, may be a tad less .
I thought linearis is hard to grow anyay. It is supposedly a Himalayan species if I recall it right. I have been to state of Sikkim in India and also Nepal and weather is like cool, misty during summers and sometimes it can get hot and steamy but still pleasant. Fairly humid and they have rains frequently, that keeps the whole region moist. Clouds were floating everywhere. Oh,I am missing it already.
Hard to describe but I know Florida is very different from those region.
So may be it does not like the heat in Hawaii. If it is difficult even for you. I am not even going to dream about it. Sad
I wonder if linearis grows better in cooler regions.
Just saying you know.

Definitely better in cooler regions....but didn't even try here. I also tried H. lacunosa here and it was a disaster....I hung it outside and the vines managed to escape and grow up a tree!!!! Big Grin

Alka,
I grow linearis here, you just have to bring it inside during the hot summer months...June - Sept/Oct. Then it's perfectly happy outside...except if it's going to be below 45º, then I bring it inside.

Thanks MJ.
Carol, I am sure you have tried this trick already.
I would not be able to bring plants inside so in my case I would not be able to try this.
I saw this plant at Gardino's and it was not too pretty.
Oh well....

Hoya carnosa cv. Chelsea has pretty leaves . Flowers seem to be light pink. I saw a pic of awesome looking almost red flowered carnosa somewhere. Does that variety exist? Anyone ?

The color of flowers CAN vary, Alka...it is not a stable attribute.

Well...I could bring plants inside...but we have no A/C (electricity is horribly expensive here) and really don't need it...so taking it inside wouldn't help at all!!!!! Big Grin

Hello everyone,

I haven't been able to get on-line,had a surgery with complications. It was one of those things where they tell you "we have to tell you what all can happen but it rarely does so don't worry". I wasn't one of the lucky ones, i was one of the rare ones. They cut a muscle loose that was really pulling my foot into an unnatural position, preventing me from walking.Ended up having a blood clot removed from a lung, just in time before it went into my heart. Enough babbling about my MIA explanation.

After reading what has been posted I am wondering if i should bring some or all of my Hoya's into the house when the heat hits here.

MJ, do you have any other Hoya's you bring inside when it gets real hot? With you in Florida (if i remember correctly) and me in Georgia,we have the southern summers HOT.
I may need to do some looking into the facts about exactly what kind of heat they can take,i know they are different.
I have found a new one i believe it's H.lacunosa 'polyneura' cv.fishtail. Is that wrote correctly? fishtail is the cultivar which is what cv. stands for correct?

Everyone have a nice week and enjoy any good weather you may be getting!!!Thumb of 2012-02-19/johoya/63a82e

Hope you are feeling better!!!

Your hoya is H. polyneura. It is about as different from H. lacunosa as cows are to cats. H. polyneura is often called The Fishtail Hoya which is not a name for it...just a 'nickname' for it. H. polyneura likes to grow cool and will do OK in AirCon. H. lacunosa doesn't do well in the cold.

Hope this helps. Hurray!

Hello all,

Thank you Carol, another mistake by EA nursery in labeling.

I have to admit though i don't understand the difference in hoya's that are carnosa & lacunosa. These are species correct? I am trying & (not doing very well) to understand the different names & abbreviations as well as how to write them correctly.I first need to understand what they mean.So the plant before the fishtail, the chelsea is also just a nickname. All Hoya's are carnosa's or lacunosa's and then given other names to tell them apart. I'm totally confused!!! If anyone knows of a site that explains the naming and/or reading them please share the site with me.I would be very thankful.

Jelinda...Hoya carnosa and H. lacunosa are species hoyas. There are over 300 of them and more coming out of the bushes every day.... I think you might find good information if you Google Hoya Nomenclature, What are Hoyas, Names of Hoyas, and just about anything you can read bout them. Your questions are very good and there IS a lot of good information on line.... Anyone have any good links? Confused
