It's all about choices.
The covering (skin) of my greenhouse had deteriorated considerably...with big holes...and we have been waiting for a couple of days of good weather (calm wind, minimal rain) to take off the old skin and put up the new. Careful consideration....and this morning was the day. So early morning saw us out there...taking it alldown (10' x 80'...that's FEET)...and then the rains started about 11:00... (NOT on the radar and NOT expected)and NOT stopping!!! ALL the plants will be soaked...and the temps down to about 63deg. Rain or sun, tomorrow we will put up the new skin and I am just hoping it warms up .... looking at possibly having to repot most of the plants... Some of the bigger plants are in more decomposed medium and sitting around in wet cold medium is NOT something hoyas like to do.

Dave...any suggestions...something to pour thru thepots that might eliminate rot? Will wait a couple of days (until I can assess damage..) andwill probably have to repot the whole lot.... ACK!!!!

If we could have NO rain tomorrow and sun....I could probably beOK.

Gosh Carol, what a bummer to get rain in the middle of a re-roofing project. I wish you well for tomorrow.

I don't have any ideas for warding off rot. For my part, I don't think 63 is that cold...

I would just let everything get good and dry after that. Really dry seems to work during our cold and cloudy spells.

I'll be beaming thoughts of warm sunny tropical weather towards you Big Grin

Carol...is there any way you can tip the plants over and slightly shift them out of the pots on their sides ? Let some air get to the soil to dry them out ? I've taken too wet plants out of the pot and wrapped in newspaper to help dry them out but I think that would take a whole lot of newspapers for you !!
I don't think 63º temps will be a problem really, I would worry if was going to be in the mid 50's or lower tho.

I agree I wouldn't worry about 63 F either. Our temps get down to that pretty much every night all summer and my Hoyas seem to like it actually :)

Gosh Carol, what a bummer. I was also wondering if you put some kitchen paper on top of soil /medium on each plant,it should help dry up the top part and then the air will get in there better. I have heard some people insert wicks in the pots, from the bottom to draw the moisture in /out. Temps should perk up soon and I think your plants should do fine . Afterall they get all kind of rain in the forests and there it stays damp much longer.

You can't 'un-ring' a bell.
Wishing you good luck. A nice warm spell would go a long way to drying things up.

Sounds like dumping them out of their pots, where possible, & setting them out on paper or cloth, to wick away moisture, could go a long way to drying them out?

With over 500 plants, tipping them out of their pots is a major undertaking!!!! The temps don't concern me, but the constant rain does. We may just go out there and work in the rain to put the skin up. Then I may take this opportunity to repot all the plants next week...or at least check the roots.

cv. Christine, the H. pottsii from Vietnam are a few I have moved out of the rain....

Carol, 500 plants? Is that what you have left after downsizing? You gotta be kidding! That is way cool to have a greenhouse that size. I would love it but don't dare because I don't think I could afford the heat bill during the winter! Hope it all works out quickly for you.

Thank you ALL. We had about 2 hours of sun (no rain...same/same) and we got the skin UP and OVER the top....pinned down in a few places. It's enough for the big system that suddenly moved thru chasing us away.... The inside isn't getting rained in/on "at the moment". When it stops we'll go back out and start to permanently 'batten things down'..... We got a plastic with built in shade so no tacky shade clothes to put over it...nice!!!!
