https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ND51TEZp4pmQPgVV6A3pBG... https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OGhiVkw4MH4Sn5mg9WZfDW... I saw this Sansevieria at a local nursey in the ground. Orange berries, obviously I missed the flowers....I do not go there generally. These were not for sale and no chance of getting a sampler either.Large mature plants. Took pictures sitting on ground. I do not know much about different varieties but I googled it. Wondering if anyone knows what type of Sansevieria this is,I am thinking 'kirkii' type. Thanks. |

Alka, From the size of the leaves on it, I'm going to say it's Sansevieria masoniana (Mason's Congo). The paddle shaped leaves can grow up to 10 inches wide and 30 inches high. It's a 'giant' among the sans.... one of my favorites. |

Hi Shirley, Thanks for the information. Do you collect Sansevierias? I collected some seeds from this one and sowed them after cleaning when I got home. I read that seeds take very long if they germinate at all and also seedling plants may look different.......like many others. This one was quite beautiful.Normally,I am not a Sans fan but I liked this one, very beautiful.....and yes the leaves were really big.......ones I saw were more grey blue with a bit different pattern than the Mason's Congo . But that could be due to plant's age.Right? Wondering where can I get it. Any good nursery? Anyone on the forum? |
|

I have the Mason's Congo...beautiful...but very very slow growing. I'm not really a San Fan either but this was a gift from a very sweet gardening friend after I made the comment about not really into San's but liked this particular one. |

Alka, I do collect sans as well as cacti, aglaonemas, philodendrons, and hoyas. I got S. liberica seeds from the C.S.S.A. (Cacti & Succulent Society of America) a few years ago and had good luck germinating them. Just provide humidity and warmth till the seeds germinate and be patient. Bob Smoley in Dunnellon, FL has a great selection of sans. He also sells hoyas. http://bobsmoleys.com/ Shirley |

Shirley,How long does it take for seeds to germinate? I read reviews abot Bob Smoleys nursery. Mixed reviews. Looks like plants are smaller than most people expected(I am OK with starters if site tells me how big a plant is going to be), loooong delays in finally getting the plant(probably do not have that much patience),often mislabelled plants(looks like a trouble) but has a good collection and so on.............I guess I will keep looking. It is not my top priority but I think I would like to have this Sansevieria. Also,If anyone here has enough to share or willing to share, please let me know. May be we can work something out. |

Alka, You might want to check for sans at this site. They have a large listing of them. http://www.aridlands.com/ |

Shirley,Thanks. This one looks fairly good.Anyone has personal experience with Arid Lands? I wonder if they would ship to Florida. Often Az has different set of rules. How long does it take for seeds to germinate? I wonder if they will come true. |
|
|||
Alka, Germination time can range from 1-2 weeks or several months. Seeds may or may not come true to type. I have never ordered from Arid Lands. |

Thanks Shirley. |

Just an update since some of us may be interested- I sowed 11 seeds and now have 4 plants about 2-3 inch tall.Rest of the seeds either rotted or did not germinate since I had the pot sitting outside. Plants look different as is expected from seedlings . I read it takes a while to develop spotting pattern on leaves and seedlings do not always have same look. Wondering if they need any fertilizer yet. It will be years probably before the plants get big enough to show 'true colors'. But it was really fun growing them from seed....first time for me...with sans. I fussed over those seeds whole summer. I am also getting a grown plant today, for insurance.....local plant show. Hope I do not come home with a hoya as well. ![]() |

Alka, That's great news about your seedlings. Are they seedlings of S. masoniana? Hope you find some beauties at the plant show to bring home. Have fun! Shirley |

Thanks Shirley. I am back from the show. The nursery did bring a good size S. masoniana but advised me against buying it when I noticed pot was full of ants. So,I did not buy. It was nice that they did not try to get me to buy it and I value that honesty . Normally when you ask nurseries to bring something at the show, you have to either prepay or buy it there. I am not really into Sansevierias but I like this variety. At the show there were some other varieties like Sans. Kirkii 'coppertone' (pretty but not the thing for me) and Sans cylindrica(that one was scary), I did not buy any. May be I should just buy one online. However, I did get a Hoya mindorensis..... and a Tillandsia..... and a Cactus(first ever for me) because after all that driving I did not want to come back without a plant. The seeds were from the plant I posted on the link in the beginning . I do not know what it is but based on discussion above I assume it is masoniana. But if it is not, I am still OK. |

Here are the pictures (hard to see that long S shaped Tillandsia,it is lying against tree branch on the leftand has a flower spike also)-![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Alka, The sansevieria seedlings look great! Congratulations on your first cactus. It looks like Discocactus araniespinus which is a nocturnal bloomer at maturity with scented white flowers. Shirley |

Thanks Shirley, I hope the seedlings continue to grow well. I have to be careful not to overwater. And yes, that is a Discocactus. Seller did not know which Discocactus but she said it has a scented ,white flower that opens up in late evening. Does anyone know what kind of Tillandsia I got? Seller forgot the name and did not have a tag. Said to hang down and makes a chain as it branches and has purple flowers. |

Congrats on the seeds sprouting, it really is fun to grow from seed! I wouldn't know which Sans that is but I thought I'd mention that Sansevieria parva “kenya hyacinth†is supposed to be wonderful smelling. A strong hyacinth fragrance on (not particularly attractive) white flowers. Shirley if you have this variety maybe you could comment on the fragrance ![]() ![]() Keiko |
