I placed an order with Kartuz last week, and got today---plants look great.. One thing...make sure to call them and check if a plant is out of stock...they don't keep their website updated constantly. I.E., I wanted H. Obscura "Major" ( I know some might say this is not a real name/ cultivar...but it is the one I wanted due to the leaves strong tendency towards red...soooo... Whistling ) I also ordered H. Nicholsoniae from them. Both plants were perfectly packed and healthy.

I also won my second plant on eBAY from CB. Yes...I have followed some of the drama...too bad everything went south / sour.. Crying . I wish I had been around when Liddle was alive....ANYWAY..... I got a H. "Mathilde" from her....also professionally packed and very healthy.

This is H. Obscura "Major" from Kartuz:

Hi Patrick,

You should call them try to talk to Michael, the owner......the website is never updated...What Michael Kartuz told me to do is to order another hoya...then put a note TO HIM in that says in the ordering notes "Substitute H. Lacunosa etc. etc. for H. Obscura Major" I was nervous the whole time, waiting, since they never confirmed they got that notation...but it did arrive accurately! As of last week...they had them in stock! Big Grin

Does not sound like a good customer service. It is a popular nursery though, for all kind of plants. Glad to see the outcome was good.
I have obscura too. Not doing too well, I do not do well with moisture requiring plants. Mine is dying slowly. Yours is beautiful.
Mathilde and nicholsoniae are also very pretty.

@ Plumeria...yes,,,kind of disorganized...but I guess I would rather have a dishevelled nursery website with healthy plants than have a fancy website with crappy plants...LOL....as far as watering and moisture, I find that misting them every day, sometimes several x per day, ( my orchids & the hoyas) is more beneficial, and often more Essential than watering. However, Obscura is a Thirstier plant, esp. in this dry and windy Kansas heat. I got my Obscura " Philip" from Gardinos when it was very small, and now it is HUGE only 1 year later....never repotted it, and the pot barely has any soil medium, just chunky cactus mix....and it is super happy in the heat! I'll post a pic.

@ Juliek...thank you so kindly...I am a sucker for Foliage!!! Smiling

@ Lali..WOW....I saw the photos Kartuz had...but yours of their plants are great !!! Some ppl say that there is no such thing as " Major" obscura... but all I know is...whatever it is...I love it!!!! ( and my Obscura "Philip" looks nothing like it....tho' it is very full and healthy... blooms alot and smells fab)

Thanks everybody

I hope the leaves stay that way in my zone 6.

Laurah:

I just placed an order with him also after I saw your plants. The Nicholsoniae is what I'm after mostly. I did order the Obscura also but I don't remember it saying anything about "major" so I'm probably going to receive a regular one. Bummer! oh well, LOL but he had the carnosa "Dee's Big One" and I'm into getting as many carnosa cultivars I can.

Thanks for the tip!

@ JulieK:, I would be thrilled to share a cutting with you ( or anybody else... long as I have availability---julie is 1st in line Sticking tongue out ) once baby is grown...if it grows as fast as my other Obscura, it'll only take less than a year.

@Susan, Yes I just checked and they are out of Obscura "Major".... darn....it was there last night. I know b/c I checked for Subcalva....he just put it in stock yesterday.

Subcalva is not top on my list...but everyone who has one cannot say enough great things about it. hmmmm.....

It's all about choices.
Subcalva can be a real bother sometimes...for me. The leaves get all funny looking (normal) and then it looks OK. When I water it as much as I do other thin leafed hoyas it rots...so I grow it on the dry side. And....it blooms all of the time!!!! Love it!

Yes, you are right. i already killed several orchids that way-- too much h2o. So now, I do very similar...cactus mix for All my potted orchids and succulents ( all new hoyas, too)--- local nursery has good cactus mix...busted up lava rock, charcoal, bark, ( coco chips) and perlite. ...I add hydroton to it....

gotta love hydroton!!!! ( oughta make some of my own...I' m a ceramist... hmmm...like i got the time to rollup hundreds of little terracotta balls & fire'em-- hah!) Hilarious!
