what would cause a umbel to drop off before opening 1 stem (don't know correct terms for bloom stages) at a time? They kinda looked like maybe they were drying out, then falling off. There are a lot of peduncles some they tips are quit big. They are still growing and look healthy!

Do they need more water than usual or could letting it dry out any cause this to happen?

Jelinda,
This probably caused by too much water, too little water...too sudden a change. I grow Hoya's and Orchids, and after TS Issac when thru I've had a lot of blasted blooms. Even with moving plants....and just moving them can cause them to blast....or the Sun/Clouds/Moons didn't align....sometimes there's just not alot you can do to thwart Mother Nature and you just have to go with the flow......or you'll drive yourself nuts trying to second guess it her.

thanks MJ,

I could most definitely drive myself crazy if this keeps up.The second that made it to blooms didn't fall off one bud at a time,i went out this morning & it's simply gone. Confused But there are a lot more still to go surely a few will open sooner or later.

It's all about choices.
It seems to me that the blasting happens simply when the plant 'isn't feeling right' which could be because of everything mj says. But also I would look at fertilization and the condition of your potting soil. Hoyas, of course, aren't fertilized in the wild (except for organic decay) but then, they usually don't look that hot in the wild, either. What do you fertilize with? and how often?

i use a 15-30-15 on my flowering plants about 3 weeks or 4 apart,i also add super thrive to their water sometimes.Nothing fancy and i read that you can fertilize Hoya's to much so i don't hold them to the every 2 weeks schedule.
We have had an unusual amount of storms this summer,so i haven't been having to water them as a matter of fact i usually end up bringing a lot of plants inside or under the porch.Because of this they haven't been feed even as much as i would like. They have a lot of chances to come, right now there is at least 5 that are almost to the stage where i lost the others. The plant is covered in penuncles. That said...I have H. merrelii with about 20 rachis 1" - 2" long (indicating age of blooming) and I have never seen a bloom...they blast when forming and I have done EVERYthing!. Maybe I will repot it!!!

Jelinda...as an experiment...why don't - next growing season as the days are getting so short - you try giving half strength of that fertilizer every time you water? I use that NPK too...just to see if it works better for your plants?

Hi All,

Had to jump in on Carol's question, ( What do you fertilize with? and how often? )
Nothing fancy here, I use 1 Tbs. of MG to every 5 gal of water, I use that every time I water all year long
Then once a month I water with EM-1 soil conditioner,,, That's it.

I do not really fertilize much. If I use anything,it would be half strength, either that regular Miracle Grow(10 10 10 I think) or Orchid fertilizer which has higher N than P. I do not think I fertilized more than 5 times in the whole season. Weird thing is whenever I fertilize, I rains heavy afterward, washing it all out. Grumbling
Growing season has been more rainy than usual this year. So, I did not need to water them much either.
My plants are still young.
I had bud drops with pubicalyx and also crassicaulis, specially when I watered them during buds but over time they grew more and are doing better.

Kim....nothing wrong with Miracle Gro!!!! I use it foliarly maybe 4 x year. Good looking plants!!!! That H. aldrichii will get beautiful red leaves when grown in high light! I like Dyna-Gro BLOOM or anything in the 15/30/15 myself.

Alka..perhaps if you fertilized more you wouldn't get so much blasting?

For my hoyas hanging outside in the woods, I use Nutricote ... 16-16-16 slow release. Makes life easier for me...

Hurray! for all the great plants.

My plants really took off growing this growing season.I have them hanging on a wire between 2 tree's and my 4 year old grandson loves walking by them he just laughs, saying they are alive because they grab him.The 20 month old is scared to even go close to them.Every time i see them i think about the thread Carol wrote "tips up" it should be tips up, across, straight out, at angles. My friend said if you want to look at the Hoya's beware they get friskie!! Rolling on the floor laughing

I was having problems taking pictures and then my little granbaby sent it swimming so i will look to see if i can find one that you can make out.Time for new camera Shrug! Thumb of 2012-10-12/johoya/da2cfb

Alka,
This spring i moved them around a lot.The hotter it got, stronger & closer the sun got,i had to move them, they finally ended up practically in the tree's.I had my husband string up a big wire to hang them on.They are in a patch of tree's up on a hill. Now it;s not as hot so they are coming back down into a little more sun at a time, except H.curtisii she's in the house, our weather has been crazy 80 degree's in the day and high 40's to low 50's at night.she wasn't happy so she's inside.

Carol, thanks a lot!!!! Group hug Thumb of 2012-10-14/johoya/6f5d6d

At first sight i thought mealie's also but i don't think so.I had mealie's on 1 other plant and they are actually on the plant & left a black substance on the plant.I have seen this on a leaf here & there on different plants just not that many on 1 leaf. The white thingy is attached to a thread i guess you could call it that comes off just by wiping the leaf with a finger. No damage to plant, the plant were hanging under tree's there's no telling what it could be! Shrug!

"No damage to the plant"...good news. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it...

I have found that the mealies like to hide under the clips I use to attach the vine to supports.... YUCK!!!!
