I am kinda new to Hoya and am unsure about staging them. I am begining to think there is a gene for this or perhaps a class in kindergarden that I skipped. This H. cv. Iris Marie from Carol's Summer Sale. I was just wondering what you guys thought about controling it. It's in an 8" pot and the longest stem is 4 foot. I was thinking about taking the longest stem and looping it into a verticle O. I guess I could spiral it around a tomato cage. Another option would be to chop it to become more bushy. It's got two peduncles forming. One at the bottom split. and one almost at the top of the longest stem. Would it be better to wait to rearange it until after the spurs blast or Winter? I've seen pictures of Doug and Lin's Iris Marie and am overwhelmed by the beauty. They are full and bushy. Randy Baton Rouge, La ![]() |

I would wind it around a trellis....and then, maybe, in the spring take cuttings for a bushier plant.... Leap. The net will appear. |

btw Carol, this is a really great plant. As are all the plants I got from you. Thanks a lot! Randy |

Hi Randy, Doug has a new video on his website (Vermont Hoyas) about trellising hoyas - with some really useful tips :) Good luck with your Iris Marie, it's one of my favourites too ![]() |

I'm really glad you are happy with it!!! I love it too...as hoya it's one of those 'branching' ones...it really doesnit "twine' and once you cut it back to a shorter main vine, it will produce a thicker 'trunk and branch out in an arching way. I'll post a photo of mine.... Carol Leap. The net will appear. |

Does Iris Marie bloom only on tips ? I have odorata from you Carol and I see that one blooms on nodes all along the vine. Iris Marie is similar, right? If it blooms all along, may be a trimming next season will help keep it to manageable size and produce a fuller basket. Doug, that trellis video is great.I also like that cute hairy black and white caterpillar at the end of the video. Almost like a pet. Which butterfly make caterpillars like these? |

Thanks for the link Julie. Very interesting. On the Garden Web Forum, they recommend coating the bottom of the bamboo in wax to prevent/delay rotting. Randy |

Here is odorata outside my window....the whole plant and then the two branches (took those two becauseit was a better shot). The plant in back of it is cv. Iris Marie with some volunteer gingers growing in there too and since they are very fragrant, I let them stay. Iris Marie blooms more on the tips, actually...![]() ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

Could not see Iris Marie too well but Odorata is so beautiful Carol. ![]() Must be smelling really good there, I love its perfumy scent. Does odorata bloom mainly on fresh branches ? If that is true, may be trimming would force it to make new branches and those will bloom? Thanks for 'tips' on Iris Marie. |

H.odorata blooms along all branches... they don't grow as rampantly as other vining hoyas...Iris Marie puts out more new growth...odorata will stay fairly compact. Cutting back produces new growth sometimes from both sides of the node.... Leap. The net will appear. |
