I put some cuttings to root recently(Thanks David ![]() Does that mean that there will be roots in the part buried in potting media also? Or would they be rooting in the buried part soon? |
|

Hard to predict, Alka. Your last line...is that one question or two? It should root in the potting media... Leap. The net will appear. |

Hi Carol, actually it is just one question. Did not word it well. Sorry. I wanted to know if the roots will develop inside the potting media at /around the same time as aerial roots. I would probably know by pulling out the cuttings but that will upset and break the roots if any developed. So I thought I will ask experienced folks here. I do not have too much rooting experience. |
|
|||
They probably develope the aerial roots first. The plant has gone into survival mode, you see, and the cutting is putting out something to grab hold and start growing another plant so that if the 'big roots' don't happen on the cutting, they have a place to re-root. I would cut the major arial roots off to encourage the big roots... OR... even better put both the cutting and the arial root (pinned down to the surface) in the same pot. This is not the best time of the year to root cuttings unless you have the perfect set up with lights and stuff... I never attempt it during this time of year because it takes so much longer and the suspense drives me nuts!!! What cuttings are they, Alka? Leap. The net will appear. |

Mine are in front of a south facing window, plenty of light and the room is warm....warmest room in the house. Looked like a good place to root cuttings.I did pin most of these down to the media. There was only one plant (polystachya with huge leaves) I did not put in the bag and it was in the patio outside. No roots on that one yet. Other cuttings are estrella waterfalls,pottsii,bhutanica, parasitica Laos, subclava and cv christine- all with aerial roots now. However these roots are not too long.Less than an inch long. Had to bring polystachya inside to encourage rooting since it gets cold at night in the patio. Planning to remove from the bag in a few days. I open the bag every couple of days and will enlarge the top opening gradually. I experimented with rooting in hydroton with Dougs method before ,a callistophylla. Cuttings developed aerial roots and couple of small roots inside the hydroton. But I lost it once I took it out (did that gradually over a week)and potted up in the regular mix.I think loss happened due to shock of environmental change and sudden change in the media. Plus ,I broke 1 root out of 2,while taking it out of hydroton. ![]() I hope they root this time since the potting media will remain same and the bag is not closed all the time so they are getting used to some extra air periodically. I know it is not the best time to root cuttings,specially for newbie like me. But, I am still trying.You never know, they may root. ![]() |

Sounds good, Alka. Have you cut the LARGE leaf in half? Sometimes it helps the plant have more energy for the roots but still allowing for photosynthesis.... What is the Estrella Waterfalls? H. coriacea? That's one I collected and it's beautiful!! Actually Ted went up the path and got it...gave it to me. Leap. The net will appear. |

No I did not cut the leaf Carol. I think because there is conflicting advise whether leaves should be cut or not.I put it loosely in a bag to conserve moisture but allowed a leaf to stick out of the bag and left plenty of openings for air. Will see how that goes. Estrella waterfalls 1256. |

Interesting. Estrella Waterfalls 1256 is not a species name. Does it have a species name? Leap. The net will appear. |

Carol,1256 is the IML. Cindy, that is a good link. Shows IML and DMC numbers for the plant.Impressive pics. |

OK...got it. I know that I am considered pushy, arrogant and 'stuff' by some of the people here (which I have told I am by them)...and it is not my intention to be that way. I really want to help and that's why I ask questions. I hope, Alka, that you understand...my purpose was not to be pushy but I really could NOT tell what the hoya is. Leap. The net will appear. |

Carol,not pushy enough for me yet. I understand communicating through computers may be tricky sometimes. Since I am not a very serious collector like many here, there are goofy mistakes in the way I write Hoya names. You simply wanted full and correct name. I should have said this is IML number because often times hoyas have other number like DMC and what not.....and I neglected to include even the number first time in a hurry. Numbers matter when there are many different numbered Hoyas with same name. I think link was really helpful. It satisfied all the questions. Thanks Cindy. ![]() |
