Iam a new member to Cubits. I have been growing Hoyas in Melbourne, Australia on and off for over 22 years. I think our temperatures here are far more moderate than many growers in the Northern Hemisphere - even though as I say this, at present, our current temp is 41C! Boy, is it hot - I actually left work early to come home to my Hoyas! (The lowest temps we have is about 0C in winter) Many of my plants are from Liddles Nursery, I always find Iris Marie very helpful, and all of my Hoyas from her are doing extremely well. My plants are mostly grown in hanging baskets with protection from rain & frosts. All warmer ones go into the glass house from May to mid September. I have for sometime read with great interest how others the 'other end of the world' grow, & love sites such as Doug at Vermont Hoyas and My Hoyas, have learnt so much from Cubits. Time to go out and hose down the ground of my growing area, and try to increase the humidity. HJ |

Hi Carol, well, Hoyas all survived the extreme heat yesterday. Mind you 4 years ago we had a 46C day - Serpens & Linearis (both grow like weeds here) and many others survived that! This season have some good flowering- Longifolias - all 3 forms have just finished, and Shepperdii, this plant about 24 years old, is covered in peduncles and about to open. Mindorenses, which I grow cold most of the year flowers from early Dec to late Mar. have quite a large collection. Hb grows Australian Native Orchids. most of our b-yard is under shade cloth & polycarbonate. Will post some pics soon. Enjoy N.Z., was there last Sept Hj |

Hi HJ It's nice to see a hoya and orchid collector in Oz. I started to feel lonely. It's always good to have a friend, to talk about plants in same country.. ![]() Zoe |
