Hi guys! I'm not here much due to other things going on here, but I thought it would be fun to post this... There IS hope for growing Eriostemmas indoors!
I found the peduncle in my ariadna on October 16th when we were heading for late autumn / winter and one flower opened last night. I have it in a window facing south, but it sure hasn't gotten much sun lately and still it decided to bloom.
Just came back from an overseas vacation, getting over jet lag.
Beautiful blooms, Cindy and Christina. And great photos too.
It is so uplifting to see blooms in winter.
We still have mild temps here but nothing is in bloom except naumanii trying to form buds but failing again and again ,probably would bloom in spring.
Beautiful heuschkeliana Cindy - one of my favorites! Christina, I love your Eriostemma bloom almost enough to try to grow one myself again Here is a new bloomer for me. I received it as a cutting from the Liddle Nursery in the late summer of 2011.
Very nice to see flowers this time of year.
Doug your flower reminds me of acuta some what.
Christina you must feel good being able to get this one to flower.
Thank you! Cindy, the flowers do look similar to many Hoyas that I have including acuta. Alka, the scent is very overpowering - so much so that it woke me up a couple of times in the middle of the night. I can't really describe it other than to say that it is somewhat sweet and very strong.
Doug
Do all pottsii smell so nice and strong? Just curious, because I have a recently rooted cutting of H. pottsii 'chiang mai' IML 0087 . I guess it will be a while before I see flowers.
I would love to wake up and smell those flowers if I do not have to go to work next day.
The only pottsii that I seem to be able to bloom is Chiang Mai, and this Thailand plant. I've had two other types, one of them being Cooper's Creek, for years that won't bloom no matter what I do. Alka, I can't remember off hand if Chiang Mai has a scent as strong as this Thailand IML 1336, but you won't be dissapointed in the plant. It is one of my favorites!
I also think chiang mai will be great. I have only seen pictures and it looks awesome. Hope it blooms this year. It is well rooted now. I also like how the leaves feel to touch.
I have 5 peduncles on crassicaulis, hope they make it. I am really looking forward to it's blooms. Have naumanii with couple of peduncles with small buds but they have not grown bigger.
Weather is warm here now but we get colder temps next week.
Chiang Mai is worth keeping just for the foliage alone; the flowers are just a bonus! Fingers crossed for you Alka that your crassicaulis make it to the open flower stage. We are getting a few days of January thaw here; last week we had a day that got to minus 17°F, now we are going to hit 50°F on Sunday. I'll take all of the warm weather we can get.
Beautiful blooms Doug! ...and I had a quick look at the new page you created on your website too. The leaves are drop-dead gorgeous too. I love that dark margin
