I have never had a hoya, but my friend had a beautiful collection and I remember her hoya had beautiful leaves that looked like leaves. I was on another forum on another list and some poor person ask to have their plant ID. They were not answering this person and I felt sorry to see them ignored, so I told them to post the picture on cactus and succulents because it was all curly leaves and looked like some succulent to me. Much to my embarrassment , this person came on and gave him a link to "his" hoya so he could see how to care for it. Is my face red! But, I did say I did not know what it was, so I guess I am excused for that. Now that you know why I am here. Please explain to me where I can go to read about the difference in these plants. Are there different species that have regular leaves and others with curley leaves? I found pictures of both. I like the curley leaves, but never saw them before and I would like to compare the difference in the plants, their growth, and propagation. Please just point me in the right direction. Thanks. |

Jacquie...with about 300 different species...it is a really big big question. I can direct you to the website of Christina Karlsson... http://www.myhoyas.com She has pictures, growing tips etc. Yes, some hoyas have wavy margins, but I don't know what you mean about 'curly'... wavy yes. Sometimes nutrition and environment play a big factor...sometimes .... I can think of H. erythrina and H. kanukamariana as having wavy margins.... Hope this helps. Carol Leap. The net will appear. |

Carol, I think one I saw on one of the databases was called Kurly something. I love the way they look. I honestly thought they were a succulent . The ones in the hanging baskets are so beautiful. I will check out the Karrisson link. Thanks. See you on FB. Hugs. |

Carol, I went back and copied a shot of the plant that I thought was a succulent and in fact was a hoya. It shows the curly leaves I was talking about. Now, if they are not curly then my one eye is truly the problem. To me they look curly. The link you gave me is too much for me to go through all of it just now. Have to get busy on some paperwork, but this is the plant that started all this.![]() |

Jacquie...you are too right...I had forgotten about H. compacta which has a really 'distorted' leaf (in my book...I always think it's infested with some horrible bug). This is fairly common, actually and there are clones that are variegated and some more tightly 'warped'. They are really cool looking...and also a haven for mealie bugs!!!! Leap. Oh God, that is all I would need. I am not sure if you caught up with my scale problem in some of the forums. I have been fighting the what I call the blueberry scale, it is brown and loves the fragrant plants like gardenias, jasmine, etc. I found some in my bird room and the greenhouse and for two days have been just going out of my mind trying to get them off the houseplants in the birdroom and removing all the plants that had them on in the GH. I had purchased a mandevilla a few weeks ago from a very good supplier and that was the first plant I saw them on. I also had it in the house and moved it to the GH, so it was the only plant that was both places. I thought I got them all off but yesterday I found them on three more gardenias (my big aimee stocks which are now outside being frozen to death), and two other younger gardenias as well as another mandevilla. I think I got them all. I have checked all the Christmas Cactus and the other cuttings I have in the GH and all are clean. What a H of a job that was. I am just worn out and annoyed that I got them. I need to be sure they are gone or the State Nursery Inspector will close me down if he finds one live bug during the inspection. Mealy bug is not part of my plans either. Thanks for helping me with this plant. I do like them and think I may just get one to play with later....after the inspection. ![]() |

You might go for the cultivar Krinkle 8...it has movement in the leaf but not tight. I find that Imidocloprid works on scale...I use Tree and Shrub and double the recipe and water it in. I know there are a lot of choices out there on the Imidocloprid...but I use one by Bayer and it wants 2T per gallon and I use 4. I don't worry about killing bees because we don't have them in the gh. Also spraying with soap/oil 3 times at 7 day intervals gets'em too. The only way I got mealies out of my H. compacta was to submerge the whole freaking plant in a bucket of soapy water!!!! Leap.
