Hello everyone. I'm hoping to get some help on H. obscurva. I bought my first plant from Carol in 2009...very large and beautiful...in May of 2010 it formed many peduncles and bloomed nearly constantly from May until January of 2011. Since then it hasn't bloomed a single time; so it's been well over 2 years since the last blooming phase. The plant remains in the exact same location...in a south window. Interesting that the plant has only bloomed on the half that gets only artificial light...never on the side facing the window. Since then, I've purchased 4 other types of obscura. None of them have bloomed either, though they grow rapidly and are quite large now. Tell me, if possible, what I'm doing wrong. I am now fertilizing with K-lite, but used Dyna-Gro, Miracle Grow, Eleanor's VF-11 previously. It was with Eleanor's that the plant did so much blooming; I bought another case of this last year...used it until the case was empty, and still no blooms. How much water does this plant want? I fear that I'm over-watering, but if I don't water, I get lots of yellow leaves. Do you know if this hoya wants cool/warm/hot temperatures? I did re-pot the one from Carol over a year ago. Any help would be more than appreciated. Thanks so much! Fondly, Patrick

I think this Hoya likes cool and not much sun...........and probably does not like me either.
I bought a nice plant from a local vendor that usually does not sell Hoyas, at a plant show- his display obscura was blooming it's head off in a large basket and I was attracted due to scent......like a honeybee. Hilarious!
Mine lost 3 cuttings, out of 4 in the pot when I let it grow outdoor. Repotted remaining cutting and began tender loving care.
Currently it is in a protected but sunny location for last 3 month but not a milimeter of growth to be seen.
Before that, I had it in indirect light in AM,indoor and shade rest of the day, whole yr and grew 2 puny leaves....despite all the attention.
I ignore it much of the time now,but that made no difference. Grumbling
I am going to move mine to previous location and see what happens. The scent of obscura flowers is really beautiful ,the reason why I have not trashed it yet.

It's all about choices.
Alka...I am beginning to think that some 'clones' on the market are stronger than others. For instance: any of the hoyas I have that have been wild collected are so much vigorous than anothers that have grown up in 'captivity'...I have no scientific evidence nor proof. I have grown H. obscura successfully and tragically!!! There is one clone (smaller leaves than the other) that always bloomed well for me and the other NADA!

H. obscura comes from Philippines and it should like warmth...but to dry out between waterings. It does not like soggy feet, either and it does like some ambient humidity. Air flow is very important, remember...and I think critical to these plants.

Carol, I learned that most of Philippine stuff grows nice at my location and obscura did get conditions it requires. It still did poorly. May be it had to do with clone. Shrug!

Thanks, Carol...but, my obscura, from you, was a fabulous bloomer for 9 months....from spring until the following January...so, I'm dumbfounded by it stopping from blooming...it's bloomed during very high humidity and relatively low humidity. The light is always the same. The temperatures change greatly by the seasons, but it's always been grown with lots of warmth. I have 5 different types of obscura, and only the first one has ever bloomed...though they all grow very well. I did switch lighting from T12 lights to T5..which is much brighter...but, that was last year, and doesn't explain why the plant didn't bloom the year before it. I did move one of the obscura's to the basement over a week ago...it's much cooler down there and less warmth...maybe I'll get lucky and that one will bloom..then I can move all 5 to the basement! Mine are so much different than Alka's, as mine grow beautifully...the one simply quit blooming. I do have a huge addiction to hoyas, and had to start moving hoyas to the basement last autumn...now I have 3 rooms full of these plants...the gardenroom, the sunroom and the basement. It looks like I need to stop buying hoyas or add another room to my house...but, I've already added two rooms on!! LOL Does anyone else have any ideas...please? Perhaps this will just be one more thing that totally baffles me for the rest of my life! Fondly, Patrick

Patrick...I remember selling you that obscura and regretting it!!! It was such a bloomer. Now..you said that you weren't giving your plants fertilizer to help them bloom and that could be the reason the plant just stopped. It ran out of Phosphate and Potassium...used it all up blooming.

But...it could have stopped for lots of reasons...(don't ask, I haven't a clue)... I am so happy you had a lovely time with her!
