Can someone please tell me, what are these things on my Hoya Cummigiana?
I sprayed it with 50/50 water/rubbing alcohol (didn't have enough of rubbing alcohol, had to mix it) yesterday....will keep a close eye on it now.
looks like scale to me, i havent delt much with them, maybe just a qtip dipped in rubbing alcohol would take them off and kill them... u will prolly wanna treat the whole plant with some kind of killer or something, just not sure what so ill let someone else help you with that... but looks like scale to me...
enjoy that which god has given us... family, friends... and plants!
There Armored Scale bugs.If there are not many of them,Id try flicking them off with a toothpick. If there are too many,Insecticidal soap will work with multiple applications. Here is a helpful link....http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/scale-bug-how-to-control-plant-scale.htm Jimmy
Thank you so much Amber an Jimmy! I will try the tooth pick for now... There are not that many of them. I am just afraid that they will be back after I pick them...but I did spray them with 50/50...

You might wait for about 7 days (time for the eggs to hatch...I think its 7 ) and spray with an insecticidal soap. It will suffocate them. You can use alcohol too. I am fightig mealybugs and am about at my wits end with them. I drench them and the mealies are still under the clips! I think maybe I need to full a bucket with detergent/water and dunk all the plants! Least toxic way to go!
Okay, I will wait and see...if they will come back, I will spray with an insecticidal soap. What kind of soap is it? I can buy it at the store, right?
Thanks Carol!!!

You can make it...I know there's a formula...but what the heck...this can hurt: Mix 2T. of dish detergent (mild stuff...not anti bacterial) with 1/2 T salad oil. Mix in 1 gal of water. Spray.
Oh, Thank you for letting me know. I will definitely make one up...Have to get a mild dish detergent. I think Dawn is really good for that...they even wash poor duckies/animals who suffered an oil spill in it....so, I don't think it will hurt the plant.
Thank you!!!

Actually, Dawn isn't good at all....it's good for cutting grease but was warned against using it on plants. Let me verify the ingredients. I am faced with the chore of mixing up some detergent and dunking all the hoyas in my greenhouse...over 500! (growing out some crosses for a friend). I am going to just use detergent but will dunk the whole plant so it gets those buggers lurking under the clips!!!!

Those scale you do kill, are harboring eggs under themselves...so 7 days after spraying, spray again to kill the hatched scale and then in another 7 days.
Sorry...didn't get back to you on the soap. I know if you Google it (homemade insecticidal soap spray) you will find it. Just stay away from Dawn and anti-bacterial soaps.
Thank you Carol. I will definitely check online for a good soap to use. Now days, they add everything in these soaps...hand moisturizing, anti-bacterial, this and that...
I watched a video on youtube...a guy was using 100% natural DishMate soap that was made out of coconut oil.

Olesya...put a couple of drops of oil (any vegetable oil/used oil) in the mix...it acts as a 'spreader/sticker'. May I suggest that you mix it in a bucket or a sink and then dunk the whole plant (put a plastic bag around the pot/dirt) and dunk it right down to the pot...that way NO ONE will get out alive!!!! If you use the oil, 1 tablesp. of soap will do the trick....
BTW - this is the ONLY way to get the mealybugs out of H. compacta!!! You don't have to be quick about it, either...swish it around, get all that soapy water on EVERY part of the plant. Repeat when necessary. It does not harm the plant at all.....
So, Carol...to use: 1 tablespoon liquid soap + 1 quart water + a couple of drops of oil. Right?
So, if I will make a gallon, to mix: 5 tablespoons liquid soap + a couple of drops of oil?
Thank you for the suggestions!!!!

OK...this is the recipe I remember... mix in a jar: 1/2C of liquid soap + 1T. oil. Mix together. For 1 Gal. of water add 1T. of the mixture. I just found where I had written this down....
