i dont think the cicadas are going to harm them if we leave them outside... then again i might be wrong, i actually can not remember any other time cicadas have been around (i know for this brood its been 17 years, but there are many different broods that have different years they wake up... anyways, i dont have any prior experience with cicadas so maybe there is someone on here who knows more about them? i cant really imagine them being a problem though...
enjoy that which god has given us... family, friends... and plants!

How about covering them with some nettings.... or mesh. May be difficult to do on big plants. Blinking

Oh, I don't know...I hate to keep plants indoors for the next 6-8 weeks (I believe that's what they said online). Will have to come up with some covering and do more research online...
Thumbs down Thumbs down Thumbs down Thumbs down
Thanks Amber and Alka!

It's all about choices.
I should think that your university agricultural extension service should be able to help. You could Google Cicada Food Preferences (I am serious), I'm sure they aren't going to mention HOYA by name, but the family is Asclepidaceae and relatives include MilkWeed, Crown Flowers.... Crown Flowers and Milkweed are the preferred diet of the Monarch Butterfly....so you might check with a Butterfly society to see if there is any worry there....

Thank you Carol! I googled and it was mentioned only about small trees and shrubs. I will try to search for Hoya/Asclepidaceae....Will see what I can find. Thank you again!
I guess, my plants will have to stay inside...

Don't you live in an apt? Can they get that high? Why don't you put out a sacrificial plant and see if they go for it? You should be able to tell right away if the vegetation in the area is stripped....

I did the research...and all websites say that they sit on trees and bushes and they eat them, nothing about plants or veggies. I have some summer flowers planted on the balcony...will see if anything will happen to them.

There you go.

Many insects sample hoya leaves...that's what makes lots of the funny marks on the leaves...but I don't know of any that EAT the leaf. I have a lizard in the greenhouse that LOVES to eat H. rigida blooms! Must be the honey. They eat the corona...leaving the corollas...weird.
