This plant came from George Mendoza, he said it came from Polillo Island. Ted said he has sort of ignored it but it bloomed very recently and it's quite different . Flowers about 3/4 of an inch , corona is different. colour is rich, leaf shape is quite different. I'ts a really nice robust plant.

Forgot to mention that H.pubicalyx is on the left and the new plant is on the right. We were comparing the two. the plant on the right is definately a keeper.

haven't studied the corona well, but at a glance, the corona on pubicallyx is skinny and pointy, the other one is rounded. will compare more. difference at a glance is the richness of colour, the flower being twice the size and the leaf shape of course. It might be what George calls black dragon, but he said it came from that Polilli Island.

It could be .Black Dragon. I've been looking at someone's website with great pictures of Black Dragon and a note from George. Flower colour is certainly not black, more purple with a hint of grey. What made it look so outstanding was the size of the flower. Ted can study the leaf and compare when he is not doing other things. Once again, how different is different.??

Hmmmm my Black Dragon was quite PINK...not a hint of grey/purple..will try to find the picture...
Dorothy...I[m going to download your picture of the two umbels to compare.... The coronal lobes (on that dark one) are different from my pubicalyx from him too...and they match that one you show on the left hand side...could be the same plant?

Julie, I went out in the pitch black , stepping over toads, holding a flashlight to smell our H.pubicalyx and both the new plant and the pubicalyx hanging in the tree and blooming all the time smell the same. Wouldn't you think they would have a different fragrance. ??
Ted wrote to George in P.I and maybe he can shed some light on our plant. Mayabe Dale has published it already. Hope not.

I've got to say, to my untrained eye, the corona of black dragon is a different shape to the corona of the latest pubicalyx? Also the leaf is rounded,/ fat, and the leaves I see on the pictures of Black Dragon are the skinnier variety. Don't know how important that is. there are other differences too.
