Hi everyone...So i decided to take a chance and order 12 hoyas from Epiphytica.13 days in transit.Of the 12 I only lost 2...Hoya darwinii ,and Hoya mitrata giant leaves. They didn't look in that bad of shape, but the base rotted on both of them.Next time around, ill try semi hydro for more air flow.I found some glass bowls at the dollar store, and cut slots on the bottom and on the sides for drainage and air flow. The hoyas really seem to like it!I have them on a heat mat for now under a 100 watt black-star UFO led.Hoyas really like the led lights !Here are a few photos of some of the ones I ordered...Will be posting more pics shortly!
Hoya sp. (EPC-209)
Hoya clemensiorum
long leaves
Hoya praetorii with new growth!
Hoya alagensis with new growth!
Hoya danumensis with new growth!
Jimmy, nice plants. I am happy that most of them made it and look great! Are these all rooted plants? I've never ordered from Epiphytica...but seems like they have nice size cuttings/starter plants.
I like your glass bowls...also the gray pot from the dollar store as well. I got some of those too (plastic pots). What I could not find in dollar stores this spring are those trellises like you have on your photo.
Nice plants Jimmy! Have fun!!
Nice set up Jimmy. Hope they all root and grow well and we get to see the pictures of flowers later.
Can you please tell me how you made the slits in glass bowls....... tools needed and any tips . I want to experiment with some of the bowls I have.

Have you grown Hoyas in the glass bowls? I have just discovered that all the plants I have grown in the clear/translucent pots die...and I have thought it is because light gets to the roots which really prefer dark/moist enviornments.
Hi... Thanks for showing an interest! The hoyas I received from Epiphytica were all rooted plants, bare roots wrapped in sphagnum moss, then wrapped in plastic and rubber bands. There were wrapped really tight, but could still see some moisture through the plastic. There were also a lot of yellow leaves, leaves that have fallen off, and leaves that were just kinda brown and crispy as well, all laying in the package. The box was totally sealed on all sides too. It's no wonder a lot of leaves fell off, with no oxygen to the leaves and roots, plus being on total darkness for 13 days! After a soak in water with super thrive and aqua shield, they did rehydrate nicely! To cut the slots in the glass you need a wet saw.I have on in the shop I work at being i am a glassblower. Its much easier to buy the bowls at the dollar store then blow your own...to much time!lol. A local glass shop or someone who deals with glass mirrors my be able to cut the slots for you.As far as glass bowls goes Carol,I've had good luck with a very airy and chunky mix.Aerial roots seem to grow in the light in humid forests in the wild,so I thought they would do the same in glass as well. One precaution though....glass amplifies the moisture in the bowl, kind of like a terrarium, causing plenty of condensation around the sides of the glass, which will cause the roots to rot if there is not plenty of air flow.that's why I cut the slots in the bowls.I find the glass keeps the humidity in much longer then clay or plastic pots.In addition, the glass also amplifies the internal temperature of the soil ,which is also good for root growth.Ive made semi hydro glass containers as well, but gave up on it because of excessive condensation on the glass making the roots rot,Its very humid here in NC during the spring and summer months.I do have a new design of semi pot that has slots all around the outside, that sits inside another container.Guess I have to make it and post pics,to better explain it. Jimmy
Here is the Rest of the order....Hoya desvoeuxensis
(H. megalantha pink)...this poor guy lost all of its leaves in transit, but nice roots and green stem!
But i think its gonna make it!
Hoya uncinata
Hoya albiflora
'AH-0240'
Hoya caudata. This one was the best looking of the bunch!
Hoya megalaster with new growth!
These plants look very good after being in the box for 13 days. Even the skinny guy (Hoya desvoeuxensis).
Oh, you're a glassblower....my dad is a glassblower too. Not that it pertains to our conversation about your order but decided to share my Mother's day present from my dad this year...He made it with his own hands....I am proud of him!!
Keep us updated on your plants! Good luck!!

It's on Hoya Plants.... (the first one). Then there is a recent one but I can't find it now.... I went back to look and can't find it. Seems quite a few complaints about AleyaGarden...sure wouldn't order from them now as they seem to be having problems with the plants they are shipping....

Olesya - that is SO beautiful, what a lovely present
I have to say that I would not recommended buying anything from Aleya Gardens .You will in the end have heartache.I have tried a few times buying from him and all my orders have come looking like they have been cooked.
Wow!What an awesome present...your father is very talented!I dabble around with ornamental glass, but my profession is making scientific glassware for labs universities, etc.I'm originally from NJ as well. There is a school in NJ that teaches glassblowing. As far as my Thailand order...I was probably on of the lucky ones to get some good plants.Spring was on the cool side this year, and I believed that helped the plants a lot!Plants are doing really good so far.I can see new roots in some of the bowls..Hoya albiflora in particular
I had good luck rooting Hoya imperialis with the glass containers as well.I just wet the mixture, under the facuet, dipped the cutting in root tone and placed it on the heat mat and didn't water it for three weeks, then just sprinkled a little water on top.The mixture stayed slightly moist the whole time, but definitely not wet...Here is the cutting one month later
Jimmy,
My dad does something close to 'scientific glassware' as well...and all 'ornamental glass' is his 'hobby'. He likes it. He's been in this field for 35 years now. So, I guess, he likes it.
Your plants look happy in glass bowls...it's kind of nice to see roots...pretty cool.
Thanks Olesya! Here is something I made in my spare time...Some hand blown semi hydro glass hoya containers.I have a new design I'm working on now...which will allow more air flow.
Hanging sh pot with resevor to catch excess water
