It's all about choices.
I grow both ways, Marilyn and sometimes at the same time. Often I will hang the pot in a tree-the hoya grows onto the tree and then is not dependent upon the roots in the pot, so I can cut it down and start over...or not.

I have put the cutting in leaf litter in a crotch and it has grown.

...and I've just put the rooted cutting/plant at the base of the tree and tied it onto the tree (or not) and it grabs hold.

I have about 20 Hoyas growing in a huge stand of bamboo.

It will be the amt. of sun/light that will make it or break it...not the tree itself...
Leap. The net will appear.
