HA...I agree with you, Laura...the taxonomy part of any genus is tough! The way I see it is that the plants just ARE whatever they are and they grow however they want to. In the large scope of things, H. pubicalyx is H. pubicalyx whether it has a ssp. name or a cv. name or a.....? But 'MAN' has to put 'his' order in the soup...and sort it all out...and give everything a name and it is 'man' who interprets it all. So there is an unwritten but accepted caveat that before any ID there is a silent ("in my opinion")....somepeople forget the humility part ![]() So...a plant is ID'd or determined by a certain set of 'identifiers'...based on lots of details...all determined to be important by 'man'. The plant doesn't care. The plant just grows.... There are those who are called 'lumpers' (they see minor changes from the 'absolutes' as being all part of the whole) and there are 'separaters' (who take a small aberration from the 'type' as indicating a new species). Leap. The net will appear. |
