There's been a lot talk about growing semi hydro (SH) vs. a soil based mix. Mind you, these are my results grown in a GH in my part of the country. I'll let you be the judge, but I think almost anyone, any where can grow most Hoyas SH. For my medium I use only expanded clay pellets, Hydroton, Hydro Corn and now Hydro Rokz which I love. As a fertilizer I only use Miracle grow at a rate of 1 Tbs. per 5 Gal. of water (every time I water).

The first set of pics is H. odetteae both were planted last fall at the same time, so are less than a year old. Pic 1, shows a side by side, pic 2, plant was started in a soil perlite mix, 4 cuttings 4 nodes each and is a very nice plant. Pic 3, plant started SH using Hydroton 4 cuttings 8 to 10 nodes each, was repotted to a chunky mix about 3 months ago.

The second set of pics is H. davidcummingii, they were started at different times, Pic 1, shows a side by side, pic 2, plant was started and growing in a soil mix 2 years ago, 2 cuttings 4 nodes each. Pic 3, plant started last fall SH using Hydroton 4 cuttings 8 to 10 nodes each, still growing SH, this one will stay that way.

The third set of pics is H. mac, they were started at different times, Pic 1, shows a side by side, pic 2, plant is growing in a soil mix and is about 3 years old, Pic 3, plant started last fall SH using Hydroton 2 cuttings 5 to 6 nodes each, still growing SH, this one will stay that way.

And finally H. cv. Mathilde, they were started at different times, Pic 1, shows a side by side, pic 2, plant was started and growing in a soil mix last fall, 4 cuttings 4 nodes each. Pic 3, plant started only 3 months ago SH using Hydro Corn 4 cuttings 8 to 10 nodes each, still growing SH, I will repot this one to a chunky mix in a couple months. .

SO,
The odetteae speaks for itself
davidcummingsii can be tough, but they do seem to like growing SH.
Personally I like the way the H. macs grow SH, they seem to grow lush and fuller with less tip dieoff
I like how quick cv. Mathilde rooted SH, I think I'll try it with H. serpens because I have a hard time with that one.
One advantage to rooting SH, in most cases you can start with larger cuttings, that will give you larger fuller plants in a shorter period of time.
One disadvantage, you will need to water more often, at least every other day and possibly every day, some even water twice a day.
