HERE is the close-up I was looking for. The funny thing is, he is not the one I was actually gunning for. The one I was looking for came out with this one, I can identify him by the white tip in his left antler where he has already brushed off some of the velvet. Anyways, they both had just came out of the thick brush and I put the crosshairs on him. Buck number 2 was right behind him so I held off for a clean shot. They finally separated and I squeezed the trigger. Axis deer were running everywhere (there were about 10 does and a few more smaller bucks in the herd also). I put the scope up and just caught a glimpse of that white tipped antler running up a slight incline and out of sight into the brush. It was getting dark so I hurried out to check the area I had last seen him, was a well used trail there so I followed it.... but no deer laying in the brush anywhere for 100 yds or so. I went back to get a flashlight. Found a blood trail, followed it about 40 yds and there was the dead buck, but it didnt have the white tipped antler, I must have crossed my targets and shot the wrong deer, not that you could really go wrong with a deer like this one, 32 inch main beams and 22 inch spread, 152 lbs field dressed. I just finished skinning and quartering it, thats why this is being posted at this ridiculous hour..... prolly couldnt sleep for an hour anyways until the adrenalin wears off Thumbs up

Tom, I was wondering if the Axis deer drop their horns like Whitetail Deer.

Tes, they do drop them, but they may drop any time of year, I think it depends on when they were born. As you can see, this one was still in velvet, yet white-tails have all pretty well dropped their antlers by now. He was getting ready to start polishing the velvet off his antlers. His bigger brother (white-tipped) has already started, hope to get a close up of him also very soon!!

I hope you get a close up of him also!

We spent the weekend in San Antonio with Mom for the holiday. I hope maybe some time this summer we can come down and have more time to come and visit with you. Would love to see the area where you hunt. Just wasn't enough time to this weekend. We both enjoyed seeing your close up of this axis deer though.

Are you having lots of wildflowers where you are? We spent Saturday traveling down South of San Antonio checking out the beauty of all the flowers.

Did you travel I-37 and see that 50 acre field of bluebonets? It is very impressive. I was out towards Enchanted Rock today, and close to the rock the highways are lined with blue in some areas. I took a cell phone pic, will have to see if I can post it here maybe.

We drove 16 South to Poteet (off 410), then to Jourdanton. I haven't been that way since I was about 10. Remember a huge strawberry where we used to have our picture taken. Didn't see that though. Got gas there at the corner of 16 and 97. There was some type of hunting outfit across the street from the gas place. We turned right and ended up at 35 (eventually). I started a thread about the flowers here.

Would love to have seen a 50 acre field! Bet that is awesome! I've heard of Enchanted Rock but don't think I've ever been there.
