It is now almost the end of January and this winter has been very difficult for me since I am not a real snowbird. I do not mind the cold when the sun is shining but when it is cloudy and snowing and blowing every other day, it is a challenge for me to stay here in the North. I found some relief the past few days bringing soil from the GH to my dining room table, working on cookie sheets and transplanted and took cuttings from the Streptocarpus and the African Violets. Now I am going to stress over where to put all these plants. It is too difficult to try and keep the temperature and humidity stable for these little plants in this stupid weather, so I am keeping them in the house until the weather settles...thus I have a space problem. I will work it out. The streptocarpus did get a bit cold on the window one night the temp went way down and even the double windows got cold inside. They showed signs of it on their leaves so when I repotted them I trimmed them back and this morning they look wonderful. Back on the windowsill and the heat under the windows is just enough to keep the chill off of them. I love the baseboard heat just for that reason. They do take more water but that is easy.I am not sure this was the time of year to trim and transplant them but it was the only thing that kept me from loosing it during this bitter cold and gloomy weather. I am still not ready to take cuttings to trade on these plants but in the future I am hoping some one will find this thread and begin to talk and eventually we can trade streps. |
